2022 Monterey Bay FC Season
The 2022 Monterey Bay FC season was the club's first season since their establishment on February 1, 2021. The club made its league debut in the USL Championship as well as its domestic cup debut in the U.S. Open Cup. Background Monterey Bay FC was established on February 1, 2021, as the result of owner Ray Beshoff retaining USL Championship franchise rights from Fresno FC which folded in 2019. Frank Yallop was initially announced as the team's sporting director on February 1, and on April 12, 2021, he named Ramiro Corrales to the role of Technical Advisor. Yallop and Corrales were named to the roles of manager and assistant-manager respectively on April 22, 2021. Monterey Bay Football Club is an American professional soccer team based in Monterey County, California. The club was established on February 21, 2021, and is a member of the USL Championship, the second tier of the American soccer league system. It began playing during the 2022 USL Championship season as a member of the league's Western Conference. History Former Monterey Bay teams The Monterey Bay had its first professional team in 1993 when Santa Cruz Surf joined the USISL. The team would only last through the 1994 season, but professional soccer's absence would not last long as the Monterey Bay Jaguars were established for the 1995 season. The following season the Jaguars would change the location in their name to "California" and have their most successful season, defeating the Richmond Kickers 2-1 to win the USISL Select League Championship. Carlos Herrera (born 12 September 1997) is a Mexican professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Monterey Bay in the USL Championship. Career College career Herrera started his college career at Iowa Western Community College, transferring after two years to Texas A&M International University. While in college Herrera played for NPSL clubs Little Rock Rangers and Laredo Heat. James Murphy (soccer, Born 1997)
James Murphy (born September 17, 1997) is an American soccer player who plays as a midfielder for USL Championship club Detroit City FC. Murphy grew up in Scotch Plains, New Jersey and attended Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, where he was named as the 2013–14 Gatorade New Jersey Boys Soccer Player of the Year. Club career United States Murphy came through the ranks at the Players Development Academy in his home state of New Jersey. He played for the United States under-20 team during the 2015 Stevan Vilotic Tournament and 2015 Four Nations Tournament. Also in 2015, Murphy went on trial with the Philadelphia Union of MLS but ended up not signing with the club. Samuel Strong (born August 23, 1996) is an American soccer player who currently plays for Rajpracha FC in the Thai League 2. Career College & Amateur Born in Santa Barbara, Strong played youth soccer with Santa Barbara Soccer Club and Real So Cal. He also played one season of high school soccer with San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara where he graduated in 2014. Strong received a scholarship to play college soccer at UC Santa Barbara between 2015 and 2016, where he scored 2 goals in 30 appearances for the Gauchos. In November 2016, Strong was charged with felony count of assault with a deadly weapon and a misdemeanor count of reckless driving. Hunter J. Gorskie (born June 27, 1991) is an American professional soccer player. Career Youth, college and amateur Gorskie grew up in Marlboro Township, New Jersey and played soccer at Marlboro High School, where he set the career record in assists and is ranked second in career goals. He played club soccer for the Player Development Academy of New Jersey before committing to Stanford University where he played for four years. Morey Doner (born March 25, 1994) is a Canadian professional soccer player for Monterey Bay FC in USL Championship. Club career Early career In 2014, Doner played for Durham United FC in League1 Ontario. Afterwards, he returned to his hometown of Collingwood, Ontario, a town of just 21,000 people, where he played in recreational men's leagues. In 2016, he went to Brazil, where he had a pay-to-play opportunity in Brazil in the Campeonato Paulista Série A3, the lowest professional state league in São Paulo, which cost him $1500 per month.
