2022 Long Beach, California, Mayoral Election
The 2022 Long Beach mayoral election was held on June 7, 2022. Because no candidate reached 50% of the vote, there was a runoff election on November 8, 2022. Although incumbent Mayor Robert Garcia was eligible to run for a third term, he opted to run for the U.S. House instead (and won that seat). Rex Richardson was elected mayor, defeating Suzie Price. Rex Richardson (born August 18, 1983) is an American politician from California who has served as the mayor of Long Beach, California since 2022. A member of the Democratic Party, Richardson was previously served as a member of the Long Beach City Council, representing the 9th District From 2014 until 2022. Early life and career Richardson was born on August 18, 1983, at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. His father was a member of the United States Air Force and his mother worked for General Motors as a welder on their assembly line. His parents divorced when he was three or four years old, and he and his siblings relocated with their mother, living in Michigan, Minnesota, and Missouri before settling in Pickens County, Alabama, before moving to California when he was 11 years old. Alejandro Padilla ( ; born March 22, 1973) is an American politician serving as the junior United States senator from California since 2021. A member of the Democratic Party, Padilla served as the 30th secretary of state of California from 2015 to 2021. The 2022 California elections took place on November 8, 2022. The statewide direct primary election was held on June 7, 2022. California voters elected all of California's seats to the United States House of Representatives, one seat to the United States Senate, all of the seats of the California State Assembly, all even-numbered seats of the California State Senate, and the Governor of California and various statewide offices. Pursuant to Proposition 14 passed in 2010, California uses a nonpartisan blanket primary for its races.
