2022 Inverclyde Council Election
The 2022 Inverclyde Council elections took place on 5 May 2022, as part of the 2022 Scottish local elections on the same day as the 31 other Scottish local authorities will be up for election. The election will use the 7 wards created under the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, last changed in 2017, with 22 councillors being elected. Each ward elected either 3 or 4 members, using the STV electoral system. Councillor Lynne Quinn was re-elected with more votes than any candidate in the area with 1,445 first preference votes. Inverclyde Council
Inverclyde Council is one of the 32 local authorities of Scotland. Created in 1995, its administrative centre is based in Greenock and its territory covers the area of Inverclyde in the west of Scotland, taking over from the local government district of the same name and area which existed under the larger Strathclyde region, which was established in 1975. Prior to that, the territory was part of the historic county of Renfrewshire. History The council gained national notoriety in 2005 following harsh criticism from the Accounts Commission regarding poor leadership and accountability. In November 2005 the council was given a 6-month deadline to reorganise and improve further, following the resignation of the council chief in September and organisational changes in the wake of the original report. 2017 Inverclyde Council Election
The 2017 elections to Inverclyde Council were held on Thursday 4 May 2017, on the same day as the 31 other local authorities in Scotland. It was the third successive Local Council election to run under the STV Electoral System. The election used seven wards created under the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, with 22 Councillors being elected, an increase of 2 from 2012 and an additional ward. Each ward elected either 3 or 4 members, using the STV electoral system. Following the 2017 election, the Labour Party won the most seats but not enough to form majority control. At the first full meeting of the council, Labour formed a minority administration with Conservative and Independent support with Martin Brennan elected Provost and Stephen McCabe retaining his position as leader of the council. Inverclyde South (ward)
Inverclyde South is one of the seven wards used to elect members of the Inverclyde Council. It elects three Councillors. The ward includes southern areas of Greenock: neighbourhoods such as Bow Farm, Coves, Cowdenknowes, Gateside, Penny Fern, Ravenscraig and Smithston, plus a small part of the town centre (west of Broomhill Street, roughly between and railway stations). Inverclyde Central is one of the seven wards used to elect members of the Inverclyde Council. It elects three Councillors. Inverclyde East Central (ward)
Inverclyde East Central is one of the seven wards used to elect members of the Inverclyde Council. It elects three Councillors. The ward includes the majority of Port Glasgow, except the Bardrainney, Broadfield, Park Farm and Woodhall neighbourhoods in the east of the town which are part of the Inverclyde East ward. The modern residential developments at ''Kingston Dock / 4 Quays'' which straddle the border between Port Glasgow and Greenock is also within the Inverclyde East Central ward, as is the Gibshill neighbourhood which also adjoins ''The Port'' but was always considered to belong to Greenock. Single Transferable Vote
Single transferable vote (STV) is a multi-winner electoral system in which voters cast a single vote in the form of a ranked-choice ballot. Voters have the option to rank candidates, and their vote may be transferred according to alternate preferences if their preferred candidate is eliminated, so that their vote is used to elect someone they prefer over others in the running.
