2022 Chicago Sky Season
The 2022 WNBA season, 2022 Chicago Sky season was the franchise's 17th season in the Women's National Basketball Association, and their fourth season under head coach James Wade (basketball), James Wade. They were the defending league champions after defeating the Phoenix Mercury in the 2021 WNBA Finals. Entering the offseason, the Sky only had four players from the previous season under contract. The team re-signed Courtney Vandersloot, Allie Quigley, and Kahleah Copper and added Emma Meesseman via free agency. Free agent Stefanie Dolson departed the team and signed with the New York Liberty. In a sign-and-trade deal, free agent Diamond DeShields was traded to the Phoenix Mercury and the Sky added Julie Allemand. The defending champions lost the first game of the season, in overtime. WNBA Eastern Conference
The Eastern Conference of the Women's National Basketball Association is made up of six teams. From the league's second season in 1998 through 2015, the WNBA operated separate playoff brackets for its Eastern and Western Conferences. Each conference's playoff was divided into two playoff rounds, the Conference Semi-Finals and the Conference Finals, with the Conference Finals winners receiving Conference Championships and advancing to the WNBA Finals to determine the WNBA champion. In the final years of this playoff scheme, all in-conference playoff series were best-of-three. Diamond DeShields
Diamond Danae-Aziza DeShields (born March 5, 1995) is an American professional basketball player for the Dallas Wings of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). She was drafted by the Chicago Sky with the third overall pick in the 2018 WNBA draft, and won a championship with the Sky in 2021. She is the daughter of former MLB player Delino DeShields and the younger sister of MLB player Delino DeShields Jr. College career DeShields graduated from Norcross High School in Norcross, Georgia. Playing for the school's basketball team, she was a part of three state champions and averaged 26 points per game in her senior year. Kysre Rae Gondrezick (born July 27, 1997) is an American professional basketball player who is currently a free agent. She previously played for the WNBA's Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky. High school and college career Gondrezick attended Benton Harbor High School in Michigan. She was named 2016 Michigan Miss Basketball and Michigan Gatorade POY playing for Benton Harbor High School with her mom serving as an assistant coach. The Indiana Fever are an American professional basketball team based in Indianapolis, playing in the Eastern Conference in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). The team was founded before the 2000 season began. The team is owned by Herb Simon, who also owns the Fever's NBA counterpart, the Indiana Pacers, and Simon Malls. 2022 New York Liberty Season
The 2022 New York Liberty season was the 26th season for the New York Liberty franchise of the WNBA. The Liberty opened the regular season on May 7, 2022, versus the Connecticut Sun. Ahead of the season, the Liberty parted ways with head coach Walt Hopkins on December 6, 2021, after two years with the team. On January 7, 2022, the Liberty announced the hiring of new head coach Sandy Brondello On May 3, 2022, the Liberty announced that 1st Round draft pick Nyara Sabally had undergone a successful Osteochondral Autograft Transplantation and would miss the entire 2022 season. 2022 WNBA Playoffs
The 2022 WNBA Playoffs was the postseason tournament of the WNBA's 2022 season. This postseason ended with the Las Vegas Aces winning their first championship. Format In November 2021, the WNBA Board of Governors formalized a new playoff system that will structure the 2022 playoffs onward. The new playoff format scraps the single-elimination games of the first two rounds in favor of a best-of-3 quarterfinal round. As a result, all eight playoff teams, seeded according to overall regular season record regardless of conference (1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, 3 vs. 6, 4 vs. 5), will begin postseason play in the first round. The 2022 WNBA Commissioner's Cup presented by Coinbase was the WNBA's second Commissioner's Cup in league history. The Cup Final featured the top Eastern Conference Cup team facing off against the top Western Conference team. The home team was decided by the team with the highest winning percentage in Cup Play. 2022 WNBA All-Star Game
The 2022 WNBA All-Star Game was an exhibition basketball game that was played on July 10, 2022 at Wintrust Arena. The Chicago Sky hosted the game and related events for the first time. The league also debuted a new, two-day fan event called "WNBA Live," which included interactive events as well as the All-Star teams' practice. This year also brought back the Three-Point Contest and Skills Competition, for the first time since 2019. A'ja Wilson, of the Las Vegas Aces was the overall leader in fan votes with 88,407, with Breanna Stewart, of the Seattle Storm, finishing in 2nd with 79,520 votes. Allie Quigley won the MTN Dew 3-Point Shootout for a WNBA and NBA record 4th time. Sabrina Ionescu and her high school partner and NC State commit, Zoe Brooks, won the Skills Challenge.
