February 2022 Beledweyne Bombing
On February 19, 2022, an al-Shabaab suicide bomber killed 14 people at a restaurant in Beledweyne, Somalia. Background The Islamist militant group al-Shabaab – the Somali branch of al-Qaeda – began their insurgency during the 2006–2009 phase of the Somali Civil War. They took part in battles in Beledweyne, Hiran, Hirshabelle State in 2008, 2010 and 2011. In 2009, they carried out a suicide car bombing at a hotel there, killing 57 people. In 2013, they carried out suicide attacks there at a restaurant and a police station. Bombing During the morning of February 19, 2022, a suicide bomber detonated a bomb in a restaurant in Beledweyene. It killed 14 people – including a candidate in the same month's election – and injured at least another 12. On the same day, al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack. March 2022 Somalia Attacks
On 23 March 2022 in Somalia, a series of coordinated attacks by al-Shabaab jihadists in the two cities of Mogadishu and Beledweyne killed over 60 people. Background Al-Shabaab are a Somali Islamist group whose insurgency began during the late 2000s. Their attacks have included many in the country's capital Mogadishu, including the deadliest bombing in African history, in October 2017. They have also often attacked Beledweyne, including suicide attacks in June 2009, October and November 2013 and February 2022. On the week of the attack, elections in Somalia were scheduled to be held for the Federal Parliament of Somalia, ahead of the 2022 Somali presidential election. This bombing targeted candidates and polling places. On September 3, 2022, militants from al-Shabaab ambushed a civilian bus traveling from Beledweyne to Mahas, in Hiran, Somalia. Over twenty civilians were killed, and the bombing occurred in the middle of the 2022 Hiraan offensive by the Somali military against al-Shabaab. Prelude The city of Beledweyne, in central Somalia's Hiraan region, has been at the forefront of the civil war between the Somali government and the jihadist group al-Shabaab. In July 2022, the Somali government launched an offensive against al-Shabaab-controlled areas in Hiraan region, with the aid of the local Ma'awisley militia. In response, elements of al-Shabaab fled across the Somali border into Ethiopia, sparking a second conflict. Al-Shabaab's counter to the offensive, per their modus operandi, was using IEDs and other bomb attacks against the Somali army and civilians. October 2022 Beledweyne Bombings
On 3 October 2022 in Beledweyne, Somalia, al-Shabaab used three car bombs to kill at least 20 people. At Lama-Galaay military base in Beledweyne, a city in Hiran, central Somalia, two car bombs were detonated at around 10:30 am. During the afternoon, another car bomb exploded during its journey to the base. The attacks killed twenty people, including the health minister of Hirshabelle Zakariye Hurre and Hiran's deputy governor for finance and security, Abukar Madey. The bombings also injured 36 others.
