The 2021–22 season is the 125th season of competitive football in Scotland. The domestic season began on the weekend of 10 July 2021 with the first Scottish League Cup group stage matches. Most regional leagues began on the weekend of 17 July and the opening round of matches in the 2021–22 Scottish Professional Football League were played on 31 July. 2021–22 Scottish League Cup
The 2021–22 Scottish League Cup (also known as the Premier Sports Cup for sponsorship reasons) was the 76th season of Scotland's second-most prestigious football knockout competition. The format for the 2021–22 competition was similar to the previous five seasons. It began with eight groups of five teams including all 2020–21 Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) clubs, excluding those competing in Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League qualifiers, as well as the winners of the 2020–21 Highland Football League (Brora Rangers) and the 2020–21 Lowland Football League ( Kelty Hearts). A difference from recent seasons was that five clubs were given a bye to the last 16 instead of four, due to increased representation in European competition. 2021–22 Highland Football League
The 2021–22 Highland Football League (known as the Breedon Highland League for sponsorship reasons) was the 119th season of the Highland Football League, and the 8th season as part of the fifth tier of the Scottish football pyramid system. Brora Rangers were the reigning champions. The title was decided during the final round of fixtures with Fraserburgh taking their first league title in twenty seasons thanks to a 5–0 victory over Forres Mechanics. They won the title by three points ahead of Buckie Thistle, who recorded a run of 23 consecutive victories during the campaign, a Highland League record. Penalty Shootout (football)
A penalty shoot-out (officially kicks from the penalty mark) is a tie-breaking method in association football to determine which team is awarded victory in a match that cannot end in a draw, when the score is tied after the normal time as well as extra time (if used) have expired. In a penalty shoot-out, each team takes turns shooting at goal from the penalty mark, with the goal defended only by the opposing team's goalkeeper. Each team has five shots which must be taken by different kickers; the team that makes more successful kicks is declared the victor. Shoot-outs finish as soon as one team has an insurmountable lead. If scores are level after five pairs of shots, the shootout progresses into additional " sudden-death" rounds. Balls successfully kicked into the goal during a shoot-out do not count as goals for the individual kickers or the team, and are tallied separately from the goals scored during normal play (including extra time, if any). Yoker ( gd, An Eochair) is an area of Glasgow, Scotland, on the northern bank of the Clyde east of Clydebank, west of the city centre. 2021–22 Scottish Junior Cup
The 2021–22 Scottish Junior Cup was the 135th season of the Scottish Junior Cup, the national knockout tournament for member clubs of the Scottish Junior Football Association (SJFA). A total of 110 clubs initially entered the competition, reduced from 132 in 2019–20, mainly due to more teams joining the East of Scotland League and clubs that did not retain SJFA membership after moving to the West of Scotland League. In addition, Annbank United, Buckie Rovers, Spey Valley United, and Pumpherston Juniors did not compete. Auchinleck Talbot were the defending champions. They successfully defended their title for a second time with a 2–0 win over Yoker Athletic in the final. The 2021–22 Scottish Youth Cup was the 38th season of the Scottish Youth Cup, the national knockout tournament at youth level organised by the Scottish Football Association for its full and associate member clubs. The tournament was for the under-20 age group, to complement current youth development strategies, having formerly been an under-19 competition. Players born after 1 January 2002 were eligible to play. It was the first tournament to feature a cup final since 2019, as the 2020 final and the whole of the 2020–21 competition were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 2021–22 South Challenge Cup
The 2021–22 SFA South Region Challenge Cup was the 15th edition of the annual knockout cup competition for senior non-league clubs in the central and southern regions of Scotland. The tournament entry increased from 142 to a record 161 teams thanks to additional clubs joining the East of Scotland Football League and West of Scotland Football League. The defending champions were Dunipace, who beat Broomhill 3–1 in the delayed final of the 2019–20 edition on 15 August 2021. However they went out of the competition in the second round, losing 2–1 to Sauchie Juniors. Auchinleck Talbot of the West of Scotland League lifted the trophy in their first season competing in the competition, beating Lowland League champions Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic 3–1 in the final.
