The 2021–22 Washington Capitals season was the 48th season for the National Hockey League franchise that was established on June 11, 1974. On April 17, 2022, the Capitals clinched a playoff spot after the New York Islanders lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Capitals were defeated in the first round by the Florida Panthers, in six games. Metropolitan Division
The National Hockey League's Metropolitan Division (often referred to simply as the "Metro Division") was formed in 2013 as one of the two divisions in the Eastern Conference (NHL), Eastern Conference as part of a league realignment. It is also a successor of the original Atlantic Division (NHL, 1993–2013), Atlantic Division and one of the two successors to the Southeast Division (NHL), Southeast Division. Six of its teams were previously together in the Patrick Division from 1981 to 1993 (one joined in 1982). It is the only NHL division without a Canadian team, with five of the division's clubs located in either the New York metropolitan area, New York City area or in Pennsylvania and the other three in North Carolina, Ohio and Washington, D.C. The Washington Capitals are a professional ice hockey team based in Washington, D.C. The team is a member of the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Capitals played at the Capital Centre from their inaugural season in 1974 to 1997, when they moved to the MCI Center, now known as the Capital One Arena. In 44 completed seasons, the Capitals have qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs 29 times, making two Stanley Cup Finals appearances during the 1997–98 and 2017–18 seasons, winning the latter. The 2021–22 Arizona Coyotes season was the 43rd season for the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise that was established on June 22, 1979, the 26th season since the franchise relocated from Winnipeg following the 1995–96 NHL season, and the 50th overall season, including the World Hockey Association years. The Coyotes returned to the Central Division for the 2021–22 season. The franchise was previously part of this division from the time of its formation in 1993 (when the team was still based in Manitoba) through to the end of its second season in Arizona in 1998. The 2021–22 Ottawa Senators season was the 30th season of the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Senators attempted to return to the Stanley Cup playoffs after failing to qualify for the past four seasons. Vítek Vaněček (born 9 January 1996) is a Czech professional ice hockey goaltender for the New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League (NHL). Playing career Vaněček originally played as youth within HC Havlíčkův Brod through to the under-18 level before joining the ranks of HC Bílí Tygři Liberec in 2013. Vaněček was picked 39th overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft by the Washington Capitals. On 15 July 2014, he was signed to a three-year entry-level contract with the Capitals.
