2021–22 WNBL Season
The 2021–22 WNBL season is the 42nd season of the competition since its establishment in 1981. The Southside Flyers were the defending champions, however they failed to qualify for finals. The Melbourne Boomers won their second championship, defeating Perth in the Grand Final series, 2–1. After the 2020 season was condensed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was confirmed in July 2021 that the upcoming season is set to be closer to the traditional season fixture played over several months across the summer. In October 2021, a new broadcast deal was signed with the ABC, Fox Sports and Kayo, with an 84-game season fixture announced shortly after. Spalding will again provide equipment including the official game ball, alongside iAthletic supplying team apparel for the fifth consecutive season. Women's National Basketball League
The Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) is the pre-eminent professional women's basketball league in Australia. It is currently composed of eight teams. The league was founded in 1981 and is the women's counterpart to the National Basketball League (NBL). Several WNBL teams have NBL counterparts. The Adelaide Lightning, Melbourne Boomers, Perth Lynx, Southside Flyers and Sydney Uni Flames are the current WNBL teams sharing a market with an NBL team (the Townsville Fire and University of Canberra Capitals shared a market with the Townsville Crocodiles and Canberra Cannons respectively, before both NBL clubs became defunct). The Sydney Flames are an Australian professional basketball team based in Sydney, New South Wales. The Flames compete in the Women's National Basketball League The Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) is the pre-eminent professional women's basketball league in Australia. WNBL Most Valuable Player Award
The Women's National Basketball League Most Valuable Player (MVP) is an annual Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) award given since the league's second season. MVP voting takes place throughout the regular season and is determined by a players' accumulated score from game-by-game voting. In every game, each head coach and the referees from each respective game complete a voting card, with three points being awarded for a first place vote, two for second, one for third, a player can take a maximum of nine votes from any one game. It is the most prestigious award for individual players in the WNBL. Suzy Batkovic is the most decorated player in WNBL history, winning the prestigious award a record six times. Cayla George
Cayla George (née Francis; born 1 May 1989) is an Australian professional basketball player for the Las Vegas Aces of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). She was a member of the Australian Women's basketball team (Opals) at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The Opals were eliminated after losing to the USA in the quarterfinals. Francis plays for the Melbourne Boomers of the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL). She has also played in several other leagues including the Central Australian Basketball League, SEABL, LFB and WNBL. She has represented South Australia in the National Junior Championships, winning a silver medal in the U18 Championships in 2005. Jackie Young (basketball)
Jackie Young (born September 16, 1997) is an American professional basketball player for the Las Vegas Aces of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). She was drafted first overall by the Las Vegas Aces in the 2019 WNBA draft. A graduate of Princeton Community High School, she played college basketball for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, reaching two NCAA finals and winning one in 2018. She won a gold medal in Women's 3x3 basketball at the 2020 Summer Olympics and a national professional WNBA championship in 2022. Keely Froling
Keely Froling (born 31 January 1996) is an Australian professional basketball player for the Launceston Tornadoes in the NBL1. Career College Froling played college basketball for two years at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas for the SMU Mustangs. Froling decided to return home after her Sophomore season, to complete her studies and pursue her career in Australia. WNBL Born and raised in Townsville, Froling would begin her WNBL career in her home town, signed as a development player alongside her twin sister, with the Townsville Fire for the 2011–12 WNBL season. Mikaela Ruef
Mikaela Ruef (born 15 January 1990) is an Australian professional basketball player. She currently plays for the Townsville Fire in the WNBL. Career College In college, Ruef attended Stanford University and whilst majoring in Management Science & Engineering before receiving a Master's Degree in Civil & Environmental Engineering, she played for the Stanford Cardinal from 2009–2014. During her time with Stanford, she reached the NCAA Sweet 16 each season. Marina Mabrey
Marina Mabrey (born September 14, 1996) is an American professional basketball player for the Dallas Wings of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Mabrey was drafted in the second round (19th pick overall) by the Los Angeles Sparks in the 2019 WNBA draft. She previously played with the United States women's national under-19 basketball team and the University of Notre Dame. Townsville Fire
The Townsville Fire are an Australian professional female basketball team competing in the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL). They are the only female professional sporting team of any discipline in the northern half of Australia. The team was established in 2001 by Townsville Basketball Inc. In 2014, James Cook University became the team's principal partner and naming rights sponsor. Following the 2010/11 season, the Fire were seemingly doomed, folding under the weight of financial pressures before an 11th hour resurrection. Prior to the 2011/12 season, the team became a not-for-profit, community owned entity. The Fire reached four straight WNBL Grand Finals between 2012/13 and 2015/16, winning back-to-back championships in 2015 and 2016. Canberra Capitals
The University of Canberra Capitals are an Australian professional women's basketball team competing in the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL). The team is based in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory. In 2014 the University of Canberra Union took control of the Capitals from Basketball ACT. The University of Canberra is the current naming rights sponsor for the Capitals.
