2021 Warrington Borough Council Election
The 2021 Warrington Borough Council election took place on 6 May 2021 to elect members of Warrington Borough Council in England. This was on the same day as other local elections. All 58 seats were up for election. These elections were originally scheduled for May 2020, but were delayed by one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Labour Party retained overall control of Warrington Borough Council after winning 35 of the 58 seats. Warrington () is a town and unparished area in the borough of the same name in the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England, on the banks of the River Mersey. It is east of Liverpool, and west of Manchester. The population in 2019 was estimated at 165,456 for the town's urban area, and just over 210,014 for the entire borough, the latter being more than double that of 1968 when it became a new town. Warrington is the largest town in the ceremonial county of Cheshire. In 2011 the unparished area had a population of 58,871. Warrington was founded by the Romans at an important crossing place on the River Mersey. A new settlement was established by the Saxon Wærings. Faisal Rashid
Faisal Rashid (born 1972) is a British Labour politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Warrington South from 2017 to 2019. Early life and career Rashid was educated at the National College of Business Administration and Economics in Lahore. He has worked as a manager at HBOS and NatWest Bank. Rashid served as a Member of Warrington Borough Council from 2011 until 2017, resigning following his election to Parliament. He was the first Muslim Mayor of Warrington, serving from May 2016 to May 2017. Parliamentary career Rashid was elected as the MP for Warrington South at the 2017 general election, defeating incumbent Conservative and then government minister David Mowat. Warrington Borough Council elections are held every four years. Warrington Borough Council is the local authority for the unitary authority of Warrington in Cheshire, England. Since the last boundary changes in 2016, 58 councillors have been elected from 22 wards. Political control From 1900 to 1974 the town of Warrington was a county borough, independent from any county council, although treated as part of Lancashire for ceremonial purposes. Under the Local Government Act 1972 it had its territory enlarged and became a non-metropolitan district in Cheshire, with Cheshire County Council providing county-level services. The first election to the reconstituted borough council was held in 1973, initially operating as a shadow authority before coming into its powers on 1 April 1974.
