2021 Thurrock Council Election
The 2021 Thurrock Council election took place on 6 May 2021 to elect members of Thurrock Council in England. This was on the same day as other local elections. The previous election in the area was in 2019. The Conservatives won the popular vote by over 50% of total vote share, and took three seats the party had never won previously - Chadwell St Mary, Belhus and East Tilbury. Thurrock () is a unitary authority area with borough status and unparished area in the ceremonial county of Essex, England. It is part of the London commuter belt and an area of regeneration within the Thames Gateway redevelopment zone. The local authority is Thurrock Council. The borough It lies on the River Thames just to the east of London. With over of riverfront it covers an area of , with more than half defined as Green Belt. With Greater London to the west and the river to the south, the county of Essex abuts the Borough to the north and east, and across the river lies Kent. Politics The local authority is Thurrock Council. Elections are held 3 out of every 5 years. In 2021, the Conservative Party took overall control of the council, having been a minority-party administration since 2016. Thurrock is covered by two parliamentary constituencies. Thurrock Council
Thurrock Borough Council, usually known as simply Thurrock Council, is the local authority for the borough of Thurrock in Essex, England. Since 1997, Thurrock has been a unitary authority, combining the functions of a non-metropolitan county with that of a non-metropolitan district. The other such authority in Essex is Southend-on-Sea. It is a member of the East of England Local Government Association. History Poor law union and urban district In 1835, as a result of the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834, the parishes that make up the modern borough of Thurrock were united under the Orsett Union, a poor law union. The union was established on 31 October 1935. It was governed by a board of guardians made up of 21 elected representatives, each representing a parish. 2019 Thurrock Council Election
The 2019 Thurrock Council election was held on 2 May 2019 to elect members of the Thurrock Council in England. Election A third of the seats were elected on 2 May 2019. Prior to the election, the council was under no overall control, governed by a minority Conservative administration. They held 23 of 49 seats, while Labour held 17 seats, followed by the Thurrock Independents on 9 seats. Elections were held in a total of sixteen wards, with Conservative, Labour, and Thurrock Independent candidates standing in each ward. UKIP stood two candidates. The Green Party, the Liberal Democrats, and the British Union & Sovereignty Party stood one candidate each in Chafford & North Stifford, Grays Riverside, and Belhus respectively. Chadwell St Mary
Chadwell St Mary is an area of the unitary authority of Thurrock in Essex, England. It is one of the traditional (Church of England) parishes in Thurrock and a former civil parish. Its residential areas are on the higher ground overlooking the former Thameside marshland. Grays is a town centred west of it. Closer still, south is the modern town of Tilbury which was almost wholly part of the parish until the end of the 19th century. The settlement is frequently referred to simply as ''Chadwell'', particularly before the 19th century. Geology and topography The southern part of the parish was originally a natural salt marsh adjacent to the River Thames which is tidal and saline at this point. Decaying vegetation together with mud and silt from the river were deposited from the end of the most recent ice age until the marshes were reclaimed sometime before the 14th century. Belhus, Essex
Belhus is a golf course, country park, former stately home and manor in the parish of Aveley in Essex, England. The historic manor was known in ancient times variously as "Bellhouse, Belhouse (as commemorated by today's "Belhouse Avenue" in the village of Aveley), Bell House", etc. It is now an integral part of the Thames Chase woodland planned for the area. East Tilbury
East Tilbury is a village and former civil parish in the unitary authority of Thurrock borough, Essex, England, and one of the traditional Church of England parishes in Thurrock. In 1931 the parish had a population of 353. History In Saxon times, the location on which the church now stands was surrounded by tidal marshland. This is the probable location for the minster church established by St Cedd at ''Tilaburg'' which is mentioned in Bede's ''History of the English Church''. In the 1860s, Coalhouse Fort was constructed on the bank of the Thames, close to the parish church. This fort was an active part of the defences of London up to and including World War II, having originally been developed as a precaution against French ironclads approaching London up the Thames it was refortified with new armaments as threats changed over the years.
