2021 Tasmanian Legislative Council Periodic Election
Periodic elections for the Tasmanian Legislative Council were held on 1 May 2021. The three seats that were up for election are Derwent, Mersey and Windermere. They were last contested in 2015. Only two of the three seats were actually contested, as the incumbent candidate for Mersey, Mike Gaffney, was returned unopposed. The periodic elections coincided with the snap general election for the House of Assembly. Derwent The seat of Derwent has been held by Labor member Craig Farrell since 2011, when he won the seat in a by-election triggered by the resignation of Michael Aird. Farrell has been President of the Tasmanian Legislative Council since May 2019. Mersey The seat of Mersey was held by the independent Mike Gaffney, first elected in 2009. Tasmanian Legislative Council
The Tasmanian Legislative Council is the upper house of the Parliament of Tasmania in Australia. It is one of the two chambers of the Parliament, the other being the House of Assembly. Both houses sit in Parliament House in the state capital, Hobart. Members of the Legislative Council are often referred to as MLCs. The Legislative Council has 15 members elected using preferential voting in 15 single-member electorates. Each electorate has approximately the same number of electors. A review of Legislative Council division boundaries is required every 9 years; the most recent was completed in 2017. Election of members in the Legislative Council are staggered. Elections alternate between three divisions in one year and in two divisions the next year. Elections take place on the first Saturday in May. The term of each MLC is six years. The electoral division of Derwent is one of the 15 electoral divisions in the Tasmanian Legislative Council. It is situated in the central south of the state. The electoral division of Windermere is one of the 15 electorates or 'seats' in the Tasmanian Legislative Council. The division is located on the East side of the Tamar River, Tasmania, Tamar River. It is named after the town of Windermere which is located along the banks of the river between Launceston, Tasmania, Launceston and George Town, Tasmania, George Town. 2015 Tasmanian Legislative Council Periodic Election
Periodic elections for the Tasmanian Legislative Council were held on 2 May 2015. The three seats up for election were the electoral division of Derwent, the electoral division of Mersey and the electoral division of Windermere. Mersey and Windermere were previously contested in 2009, with Derwent contested in a by-election in 2011. All three seats were retained by the incumbent members. Derwent Derwent has been held by Craig Farrell since 2011. At the time of these elections, Farrell was the sole Labor Party member of the Legislative Council. Mike Gaffney
Michael Victor Gaffney (born 30 November 1959) is an Australian politician. He has been an Independent member of the Tasmanian Legislative Council since 2009, representing the seat of Mersey. Born in Devonport, Gaffney was trained as a teacher, and entered politics as a Latrobe councillor in 1994. In 2002, he became the Mayor, and was President of the Tasmanian Local Government Association from 2006. In 2002, he contested Braddon in the House of Assembly for Labor, but was unsuccessful. A snap election is an election that is called earlier than the one that has been scheduled. Generally, a snap election in a parliamentary system (the dissolution of parliament) is called to capitalize on an unusual electoral opportunity or to decide a pressing issue, under circumstances when an election is not required by law or convention. 2021 Tasmanian State Election
The 2021 Tasmanian state election was held on 1 May 2021 to elect all 25 members to the Tasmanian House of Assembly. The incumbent Liberal Party of Australia (Tasmanian Division), Liberal First Gutwein Ministry, government, led by Premier of Tasmania Peter Gutwein, successfully won a third term in government, winning 13 out of 25 seats. The Australian Labor Party (Tasmanian Branch), Labor Party, led by the Leader of the Opposition (Tasmania), Opposition Leader Rebecca White was defeated, losing one seat in Clark to Glenorchy Council, Glenorchy mayor Kristie Johnston, who ran as an independent, winning 11%. Craig Farrell (politician)
Craig Maxwell Farrell (born 28 January 1964) is an Australian politician, and a member of the Tasmanian Legislative Council representing the seat of Derwent for the Labor Party. In the 1980s, Farrell hosted ''The Cartoon Company'', a Saturday morning cartoon programming block on TasTV, with a costumed character called "Boss Poss". From the 1990s, he was a television sales executive and real estate representative. Farrell was elected to the Legislative Council in a by-election on 7 May 2011 following the resignation of Michael Aird in 2010. He also served as a councillor and Deputy Mayor of Derwent Valley Council until October 2011, and was an electoral officer in the New Norfolk office of federal MP Dick Adams. Michael Aird
Michael Anthony Aird (born 12 April 1949 in Melbourne) is a former Tasmanian politician. He was an ALP member of the Tasmanian Legislative Council in the Division of Derwent since 1995. From 2006 to 2010, he was the treasurer of Tasmania, one of few legislative councillors in history to have held a ministerial portfolio and the first to serve as Treasurer as previous Treasurers has been from the lower house, the House of Assembly. He took over the role of Treasurer from Paul Lennon after the 2006 state election. He was Government leader in the Legislative Council from 1998 to 2006. Ivan Dean
Ivan Noel Dean (born 21 April 1945) is an Australian politician. He was an independent member of the Tasmanian Legislative Council from 2003 to 2021, representing the electorate of Windermere. He also served as Mayor of Launceston from 2005 to 2007. Dean studied at Levendale State School, New Town High School and Charles Sturt University. He also received training at the Tasmania Police Academy and the Victoria Police Academy. Dean worked as a farmer, as an officer in the Australian Army during the Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation, and later as a police officer for Victoria Police, New South Wales Police Force and Tasmania Police, where he rose to the rank of Commander before being elected mayor of Launceston, on 31 October 2005.
