2021 Somaliland Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Somaliland on 31 May 2021, alongside local district elections. The election was Somaliland's first parliamentary election since 2005, and politicians pointed to the election as evidence of its political stability. Three parties – the populist Somaliland National Party (Waddani), the centre-left Justice and Welfare Party (UCID), and the ruling party, the liberal Kulmiye Peace, Unity, and Development Party – put forward 246 candidates who competed for 82 seats in the House of Representatives. More than one million people, out of about four million residents total, registered to vote. On 6 June, the National Electoral Commission (NEC) announced that Waddani had received a plurality of seats with 31; Kulmiye received 30, and UCID received 21. House Of Representatives (Somaliland)
The House of Representatives ( so, Golaha Wakiilada, ar, مجلس النواب) is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of the Somaliland, with the House of Elders being the upper house. The interim House of Representatives was formed in 1991, and driven by Somali National Movement. Somaliland National Charter of 1993 established bicameral legislature. The current House of Representatives was formed following parliamentary elections held on 29 September 2005, which resulted in a strong combined majority for the opposition Kulmiye and UCID parties. It has a total of 82 members. The latter include the Speaker of the House, Bashe Mohamed Farah. National Electoral Commission (Somaliland)
The National Electoral Commission (NEC) ( so, Komishanka Doorashooyinka Qaranka Somaliland; ar, لجنة الانتخابات الوطنية في صوماليلاند) is the national election commission of Somaliland.The commission organizes Somaliland's presidential elections, parliamentary elections, local council elections and referendums. The current Chairman of the commission is Abdirashid Mohamoud Ali. Members The commission consists seven members; three of them are nominated by the President of Somaliland, two are nominated by the House of Elders, and the remaining two are nominated by the opposition parties. The Parliament of Somaliland consists of two chambers: *The House of Elders (Upper Chamber) *The House of Representatives (Lower Chamber) The current speakership position was established in the 1990s, following the formation of the Somaliland polity. Since August 2021 Abdirizak Khalif is the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Somaliland, while Said Mire Farah is the first deputy speaker and Ali Hamud the second deputy speaker. The speaker of the House of Elders meanwhile is Suleiman Mohamoud Adan, who was elected in 2004. Somaliland held nationwide elections in May 2021 for the first time in more than 10 years. 2017 Somaliland Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Somaliland on 13 November 2017, the third direct presidential election since 2003. General elections had been scheduled to be held in Somaliland on 27 March 2017 to elect both the President and House of Representatives, but were initially postponed by six months due to the drought condition in the region. The elections to elect the President and Vice President were eventually held separately on 13 November. Incumbent President Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud of the Peace, Unity, and Development Party (Kulmiye) did not run for a second term.
