2021 Rijeka Local Elections
The 2021 Rijeka local elections were the elections for the 15th List of mayors of Rijeka, mayor of Rijeka, the two deputy mayors and the 31 members of the Rijeka City Council. It is was a part of the 2021 Croatian local elections, Croatian local elections, which were held on 16 May 2021. The incumbent mayor, Vojko Obersnel of the Social Democratic Party of Croatia, Social Democratic Party (SDP), announced on 6 November 2020 that he would be retiring at the end of his sixth consecutive term in office. The first round saw Marko Filipović (30.25%) and Davor Štimac (16.10%). Filipović is defending the "long-time stronghold" of the SDP against independent centre-right candidate Štimac. The two-round system (TRS), also known as runoff voting, second ballot, or ballotage, is a voting method used to elect a single candidate, where voters cast a single vote for their preferred candidate. It generally ensures a majoritarian result, not a simple plurality result as under First past the post. The Croatian Peasant Party ( hr, Hrvatska seljačka stranka, HSS) is an agrarian political party in Croatia founded on 22 December 1904 by Antun and Stjepan Radić as Croatian Peoples' Peasant Party (HPSS). The Brothers Radić believed that the realization of Croatian statehood was possible within Austria-Hungary, but that it had to be reformed as a Monarchy divided into three equal parts – Austria, Hungary, Croatia.
