Stevo Pendarovski ( mk, Стево Пендаровски, ; born 3 April 1963) is a Macedonian politician who serves as the 5th and current President of North Macedonia since 12 May 2019. Early life and education Stevo Pendarovski was born on 3 April 1963 in Skopje. His family originates from Galičnik. He grew up in post-earthquake Skopje. His parents were teachers. Pendarovski started his elementary studies at the then-Dositej Obradovikj School in Skopje (current-day Panajot Ginovski School) while he finished his secondary studies at the Cvetan Dimov gymnasium. Zoran Zaev ( mk, Зоран Заев, ; born 8 October 1974) is a Macedonian economist and politician who served as prime minister of North Macedonia from May 2017 to January 2020, and again from August 2020 to January 2022. Prior to entering politics, he ran a private business in his hometown of Strumica. In the period 2003–2005, he was a Member of the Parliament of Macedonia, and then he ran for mayor of Strumica Municipality, a position he held for three terms, between 2005 and 2016. After the resignation of Branko Crvenkovski from the leadership of the centre-left Social Democratic Union of Macedonia in 2013, Zaev was appointed the new party leader. COVID-19 Pandemic In North Macedonia
The COVID-19 pandemic in North Macedonia is part of the ongoing worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 () caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (). The virus was confirmed to have reached North Macedonia in February 2020. The initial contagion in the country was mainly connected with the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy as there are circa 70,000 residents of Italy from North Macedonia and resulted in many people returning to North Macedonia, bringing the virus with them. As of 9 July, over 7,000 cases have been confirmed in the country, due to its second wave caused by family reunions during Eid al-Fitr among the Muslim minority and the overall re-opening of the country to organize the parliamentary elections. 2021 Tetovo Hospital Fire
On the evening of 8 September 2021, a fire broke out in the modular hospital for COVID-19 patients in Tetovo. The fire killed 14 people, 12 of whom were patients and two were relatives of the patients. The security camera footage of the fire has showed that the fire spread rapidly and engulfed the hospital. There were 26 patients at the time of the fire. 12 patients were also injured and rescued from the blaze, they were sent to the hospital’s emergency section. The fire was extinguished by firefighters, with the help of civilians. The hospital itself was constructed as a temporary facility in 2020 to care for people seriously ill from the coronavirus. Such hospitals were set up across North Macedonia over 2020, funded by a World Bank loan, to tackle surging coronavirus hospitalizations and a shortage of hospital beds. 2021 North Macedonia Census
The 2021 North Macedonia census, officially known as the Census of Population, Households and Dwellings, 2021, was the third census held in North Macedonia since independence, and the first since 2002. The census recorded a resident population of 1,836,713, a decrease of 9.2 percent, or 185,834, over the preceding 19 years. The census was taken during the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected its administration. It was also considered controversial by some Macedonian groups; the opposition party The Left openly led a boycott. 132,260 individuals (7.2% of the population) did not participate in the census and are officially labelled as "persons for whom data are taken from administrative sources"; no ethnic, language, or religious information is available for these individuals. Zoran Džorlev
Zoran Džorlev ( mk, Зоран Џорлев; 10 January 1967 – 1 January 2021) was a Macedonian violinist. Life His father, Nasko, was a famous composer of folk music and conductor of an orchestra, and his grandfather Hristo, a friend of national hero Goce Delchev, was a member of a band of kumiti rebels that fought against the Ottoman Empire during the Macedonian Struggle. He began playing several other instruments prior to learning the violin. Džorlev was known for his renditions of narodni pesni or folk songs. He served for 14 years as the orchestra director for the Macedonian Opera and Ballet, including 3 years as the Vice Concert Maestro. This was eventually followed by a significant role as the Director of the national folk dance ensemble called Tanec that spanned six and a half years.
