The COVID-19 pandemic in the Republic of Ireland is part of the worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). In the Republic of Ireland, it has resulted in 1,687,668 cases and 8,293 deaths. 89.4% of those who died were aged over 65 and 76% had underlying illnesses with a median age of death at 82 years old. During 2020 and 2021, the country had one of the world's lowest excess death rates, which is an overall indicator of the pandemic's impact, at an estimated 12.5 deaths per 100,000 population. The virus reached the country in late February 2020 and cases soon confirmed in all counties. Members Of The 26th Seanad
There are 60 members of the 26th Seanad Éireann, the upper house of the Oireachtas (Irish parliament). Of these, 49 2020 Seanad election, were elected on a restricted franchise, polls closing on 30–31 March 2020; subsequently the remaining 11 members were nominated by the Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, on 27 June 2020. The 32nd Government of Ireland, government has a clear majority (40 to 20) in the Seanad. Of the 60 members, twenty-four (40%) are women, and thirty (50%) are first-time Senators. Cillian de Gascun, MD, MRCPI, FRCPath, is an Irish consultant virologist who has served as Director of the National Virus Reference Laboratory in UCD since 2013. He previously served as the Chair of the NPHET Coronavirus Expert Advisory Group from 5 February 2020 to February 2022. Medical career De Gascun graduated with a BA MB BCh BAO from Trinity College, Dublin in 1998. While completing senior registrar training in clinical microbiology and virology at the National Virus Reference Laboratory, he completed an MD at University College Dublin and was made a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists. The National Virus Reference Laboratory (NVRL) is located in UCD, Dublin, Ireland and is affiliated to the University College Dublin School of Medicine. Roderic O'Gorman (born 12 December 1981) is an Irish Green Party politician who has served as Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth since June 2020. He has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Dublin West constituency since 2020. He previously served as Chairman of the Green Party from 2011 to 2019. Early and personal life O'Gorman is originally from Mulhuddart, a small outer suburb. He now lives in Blanchardstown. He completed an undergraduate law degree at Trinity College Dublin, followed by a Master of Laws in European Union (EU) law in the London School of Economics.
