2021 Gamba Osaka Season
The 2021 Gamba Osaka season is the club's 41st season in existence and the eighth consecutive season in the top flight of Japanese football. In addition to the domestic league, Gamba Osaka participated in the Emperor's Cup, the J.League Cup, the AFC Champions League and the Japanese Super Cup. Background After finishing runners-up in both the league and the Emperor's Cup in 2020, Gamba Osaka started the season competing in the Japanese Super Cup but narrowly lost to stoppage time winning goal. Their league campaign was then heavily disrupted by an outbreak of COVID-19 in the squad. After losing their first league game of the season on 27 February, they did not play another game until 4 April. They started the league campaign extremely poorly, winning only one of their first ten games and only scoring three goals in the process. Gamba Osaka
is a Japanese professional football club based in Suita, Osaka Prefecture. The club plays in the J1 League, which is the top tier of football in the country. Shunya Suganuma
is a Japanese footballer for FC Machida Zelvia in the J2 League. His regular playing position is centre-back. He has previously had spells with Roasso Kumamoto, Júbilo Iwata, Kyoto Sanga, Montedio Yamagata and Gamba Osaka. Genta Miura
is a Japanese footballer who is the captain of J1 League side Gamba Osaka. He is also a Japanese international and his regular playing position is centre back. Club career Born in Toyohashi in Aichi, central Japan, Miura moved to Osaka to do his schooling. After graduating from Toin Senior High School he was signed by J1 side Shimizu S-Pulse in 2013. Miura played in 16 league matches across his first 3 seasons in Shizuoka before establishing himself as a regular in 2016 following the club's relegation to Japan's second tier. Hiroki Fujiharu
is a Japanese football player. He plays as a left back for Gamba Osaka in J1 League. Club career Born and raised in Osaka, Fujiharu joined local club Gamba Osaka in 2011 after graduating from the Osaka University of Health and Sport Sciences. Taichi Kato
is a Japanese former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He played for Ehime FC and Gamba Osaka before retiring at the end of the 2022 season aged 25. Career Kato began his career at Nagoya Grampus, appearing for both their U-15 and U-18 academies. Masaaki Higashiguchi
is a Japanese professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Gamba Osaka and the Japan national football team. He previously played for Albirex Niigata.
