2021 Falkland Islands General Election
The Falkland Islands general election of 2021 was held on Thursday 4 November 2021 to elect all eight members of the Legislative Assembly (five from the Stanley constituency and three from the Camp constituency) through universal suffrage using block voting, with the Chief Executive of the Falkland Islands acting as returning officer. It was the fourth election since the new Constitution came into force replacing the Legislative Council (which had existed since 1845) with the Legislative Assembly. Timing and procedure Under the Constitution of the Falkland Islands, the Legislative Assembly must be dissolved four years after the first meeting of the Legislative Assembly following the last election (unless the Executive Council advises the Governor to dissolve the Legislative Assembly sooner). Legislative Assembly Of The Falkland Islands
The Legislative Assembly of the Falkland Islands is the unicameral legislature of the British Overseas Territory of the Falkland Islands. The Legislative Assembly replaced the Legislative Council (which had existed since 1845) when the new Constitution of the Falklands came into force in 2009 and laid out the composition, powers and procedures of the islands' legislature. The Legislative Assembly consists of eight elected members, two ex officio members (the Chief Executive and the Director of Finance), and the Speaker. Although they take part in proceedings, the ex officio members do not have the right to vote in the Legislative Assembly. Ian Hansen (born 1958) is a Falkland Islander farmer and politician who has served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Camp constituency since winning an uncontested by-election in 2011 which filled the seat vacated by Bill Luxton. Hansen had already served on the Legislative Assembly from 2003 until 2009. He was initially elected as a member of the Legislative Council, which was reconstituted into the Legislative Assembly with the implementation of the 2009 Constitution. From 1974–1980, Hansen worked as a shepherd at Hill Cove before moving to work on Pebble Island as a stockman. He was a founding member of the Falkland Islands Farmers Association and was chairman of the Rural Business Association from 2000 until 2003. Teslyn Siobhan Barkman (born 17 November 1987) is a Falkland Island journalist and politician who has served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Camp constituency since the 2017 general election. Emma Jane Edwards (born 26 September 1971) is a British born, Falkland Islands teacher and politician, who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Stanley constituency from her election in 2009 until she resigned in 2011. She is the eldest daughter of another MLA, Roger Edwards. Edwards was born in Portsmouth, England to Norma (a Falkland Islander) and Roger Edwards. She first went to the Falklands at the age of two when her father was stationed aboard HMS ''Endurance''. Stacy John Bragger (born 1984) is a Falkland Island journalist and politician who has served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Stanley constituency since the 2017 general election. Gavin Phillip Short (born 1962) is a Falkland Islands politician who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Stanley constituency from 2009 until 2017. He was previously a Member of the Legislative Council from 1989–1993. Short works for Cable & Wireless and is the Chairman of the General Employees' Union. He is a former member of the Falkland Islands Defence Force and a volunteer fireman.
