2021 Australia Day Honours
The 2021 Australia Day Honours are appointments to various orders and honours to recognise and reward good works by Australian citizens. The list was announced on 26 January 2021 by the Governor General of Australia, David Hurley. The Australia Day Honours are the first of the two major annual honours lists, the first announced to coincide with Australia Day (26 January), with the other being the Queen's Birthday Honours, which are announced on the second Monday in June. Australian Honours System
The Australian honours and awards system refers to all Order (distinction), orders, decorations, and medals, as instituted by letters patent from the Monarchy of Australia, Monarch of Australia and countersigned by the Australian prime minister at the time, that have been progressively introduced since 14 February 1975. The Australian honours and awards system excludes all state and local government, and private, issued awards and medals (although a few can be recognised in the Australian Honours Order of Wearing, order of wearing, like those in the Order of Saint John (chartered 1888), Order of St John). Honours and awards have been present in Australia since pre-Federation of Australia, Federation, primarily from the Orders, decorations, and medals of the United Kingdom, Imperial honours and awards system. Paul Memmott
Paul Christopher Memmott is an Australian architect, anthropologist, academic and the Director of the Aboriginal Environments Research Centre at the University of Queensland. He is an expert on topics related to Indigenous architecture and vernacular architecture, housing, homelessness and overcrowding. Early life Paul Memmott was born to married couple Estelle "Cootch" Powell and Harry Memmott who were both pottery artists. He took art classes from Mervin Moriarty before enrolling at the University of Queensland. His program was influenced by student protests of human rights at the University in the late 1960s and early 1970s, as well as lecturers who considered art and architectural psychology as integral to the discipline. Amanda Jane Fosang is a biomedical researcher who has pioneered arthritis research in Australia. Lorrae Desmond (2 October 1929 – 23 May 2021) born as Beryl Hunt, was an Australian Gold Logie-award-winning singer, recording artist, radio and television presenter, character actor, and playwright, with a career that spanned over 55 years both locally and the United Kingdom. She started her career in England, in the vein of entertainer Cicely Courtneidge. Emily Banks
Emily Banks is an epidemiologist and public health physician, working mainly on chronic disease. She is a Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health and Head of the Centre for Public Health Data and Policy at the Australian National University, and a visiting Professor at the University of Oxford. Banks was appointed a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences in 2017 and was made a member of the Order of Australia in 2021. Lisa Alexander (netball)
Lisa Michelle Alexander is a retired Australian netball player and coach. She coached the Australia national netball team from 2011 to 2020. Career Alexander is a former Victorian state representative player and a member of the Australian senior wider squad. She was head coach of the Melbourne Phoenix in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy, taking the team to two title wins in 2002 and 2003. She was appointed head coach of the Australian U21 netball team from 2006–07. Roger Noble
Major General Roger John Noble, (born 16 March 1966) is the Australian Ambassador for Counter-Terrorism and a retired senior officer in the Australian Army. He joined the army via the Australian Defence Force Academy in 1984 and was commissioned into the Royal Australian Armoured Corps. He has commanded the 2nd Cavalry Regiment ( 2004–05), Al Muthanna Task Group (2005) and the 3rd Brigade (Australia), 3rd Brigade (2013–15), and deployed six times on operations to East Timor, Afghanistan and Iraq. Jay Weatherill
Jay Wilson Weatherill (born 3 April 1964) is an Australian politician who was the 45th Premier of South Australia, serving from 21 October 2011 until 19 March 2018. Weatherill represented the House of Assembly seat of Cheltenham as a member of the South Australian Labor Party from the 2002 election to 17 December 2018, when he retired. Labor was in government from 2002, with Weatherill leading the Labor government since a 2011 leadership change from Mike Rann. Gai Waterhouse
Gabriel Marie "Gai" Waterhouse (née Smith; born 2 September 1954) is an Australian horse trainer and businesswoman. The daughter of Tommy J. Smith, a leading trainer of Thoroughbred racehorses, Waterhouse was born and raised in Sydney. After graduating from the University of New South Wales, she worked as an actor for a time, appearing in both Australian and English television series. Having worked under her father for a period of 15 years, Waterhouse was granted an Australian Jockey Club (AJC) licence in 1992, and trained her first Group One (G1) winner later that year. Kay Elizabeth Bass Saunders (born 1947) is an Australian historian and Emeritus Professor at the University of Queensland. Earlyl life and education Saunders was born in Brisbane, Queensland in 1947. Trevor Riley
Trevor John Riley (born 29 January 1948) was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory in Australia. He was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court on 1 February 1999, Chief Justice on 27 September 2010 and retired on 4 July 2016. Justice Riley was born in Bruce Rock in Western Australia and was educated at the Merredin Senior High School and the University of Western Australia.
