2020 Washington Spirit Season
The 2020 season was the Washington Spirit's seventh season, competing in the National Women's Soccer League, the top division of women's soccer in the United States. The season was slated to begin on April 18, 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ultimately, the NWSL season was cancelled due to the pandemic. Th club participated in the NWSL Challenge Cup and the NWSL Fall series which were held in lieu of the regular season. The Challenge Cup was held behind closed doors at the neutral venue of Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, Utah. The Spirit reached the Quarterfinals of the Challenge Cup and finished in third place in the Fall Series. The Washington Spirit is an American professional soccer club based in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area that participates in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). It is a continuation of the D.C. United Women of the W-League and continues to field both an amateur WPSL team and a youth team, both under the Spirit name. History Establishment The foundation of the National Women's Soccer League was announced on November 21, 2012, with Washington selected as a host for one of the eight teams selected for the inaugural season. In December 2012, the team's name was announced as the Washington Spirit. D.C. United Women head coach Mike Jorden was kept on as well as assistant coach Cindi Harkes. Natalie Jacobs
Natalie Ann Jacobs (born August 16, 1997) is an American professional soccer player who last played as a defender for the Houston Dash. Early life Jacobs grew up in Coto de Caza, California. She is the daughter of Jeff and Teresa Jacobs. Her father captained the U.S. Air Force Academy soccer team. Jacobs was a 2013 and 2014 NSCAA Youth All-American. She played club soccer for Slammers FC and graduated from Tesoro High School in 2015. Notre Dame Jacobs played for Notre Dame 2015-2017. Kumi Yokoyama
is a Japanese footballer who plays as a forward for NJ/NY Gotham FC and the Japan women's national team. Yokoyama goes by ''he/him'' and ''singular they'' pronouns. Club career Yokoyama was born in Tama, Tokyo, on 13 August 1993. After graduating from high school, he joined Okayama Yunogo Belle in 2012. In 2014, he moved to L.League Division 2 club AC Nagano Parceiro. He became top scorer in 2014 and 2015. The club was also promoted to Division 1 from 2016. Averie Collins
Averie Ann Collins (born March 3, 1997) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a forward. Early life Collins is the daughter of Lisa and Shane Collins. Her father was a defensive end for the Washington Redskins from 1992 to 1994. High school Collins grew up in Bozeman, Montana where she played both soccer and basketball for Bozeman High School. During her junior year, Collins led Montana in both goals in soccer as well as rebounds in basketball. As a freshman, Collins and her team won the Montana Class AA soccer state championship. Paige Kathleen Nielsen (born October 14, 1993) is an American soccer defender who currently plays for Angel City FC in the National Women's Soccer League. Bayley Elizabeth Feist (born March 14, 1997) is an American soccer midfielder who currently plays for the Washington Spirit in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). Rosemary Kathleen Lavelle (born May 14, 1995) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a midfielder for OL Reign of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), and for the United States national team. Megan "Meggie" Dougherty Howard (born July 27, 1995) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a midfielder for San Diego Wave FC of National Women's Soccer League (NWSL).
