Lower Peninsula Of Michigan
The Lower Peninsula of Michigan – also known as Lower Michigan – is the larger, southern and less elevated of the two major landmasses that make up the U.S. state of Michigan; the other being the Upper Peninsula, which is separated by the Straits of Mackinac. It is surrounded by water on all sides except its southern border, which it shares with Indiana and Ohio. Although the Upper Peninsula is commonly referred to as "the U.P.", it is uncommon for the Lower Peninsula to be called "the L.P." Because of its recognizable shape, the Lower Peninsula is nicknamed "the mitten", with the eastern region identified as "The Thumb". This has led to several folkloric creation myths for the area, one being that it is a handprint of Paul Bunyan, a giant lumberjack and popular European-American folk character in Michigan. When asked where they live, Lower Peninsula residents may hold up their right palm and point to a spot on it to indicate the location. The peninsula is sometimes divide ...

Upper Peninsula Of Michigan
The Upper Peninsula of Michigan – also known as Upper Michigan or colloquially the U.P. – is the northern and more elevated of the two major landmasses that make up the U.S. state of Michigan; it is separated from the Lower Peninsula by the Straits of Mackinac. It is bounded primarily by Lake Superior to the north, separated from the Canadian province of Ontario at the east end by the St. Marys River, and flanked by Lake Huron and Lake Michigan along much of its south. Although the peninsula extends as a geographic feature into the state of Wisconsin, the state boundary follows the Montreal and Menominee rivers and a line connecting them. First inhabited by Algonquian-speaking native American tribes, the area was explored by French colonists, then occupied by British forces, before being ceded to the newly established United States in the late 18th century. After being assigned to various territorial jurisdictions, it was granted to the newly formed state of Michigan as ...

Michigan's 14th Congressional District
Michigan's 14th congressional district was a congressional district that stretched from eastern Detroit westward to Farmington Hills, then north to the suburb of Pontiac. From 1993 to 2013, it was based entirely in Wayne County. It was last represented by Brenda Lawrence. According to Michigan's law on redistricting, the highest numbered district must be in the southeast corner of the state. However, despite being the highest numbered district, the 14th district was not in the southeast corner of the state; the 7th district was. After the 2020 U.S. census, Michigan's 14th district was removed in the 2020 United States redistricting cycle. Future The district became obsolete, after the 2022 United States House of Representatives elections, as Michigan lost one district, due to reappointment after the 2020 United States census. Recent election results in statewide races History In the 1960s, the 14th congressional district consisted of Hamtramck, the northeast porti ...

Michigan's 11th Congressional District
Michigan's 11th congressional district is a United States congressional district northwest of Detroit, comprising portions of northwestern Wayne and southwestern Oakland counties. Until 1993, the district covered the state's Upper Peninsula and the northernmost portion of the Lower Peninsula (a.k.a. Northern Michigan). In redistricting that year, it was shifted to the outer Detroit area. Its former geographical area is now the state's first district. Its current configuration dates from 2003. Population growth in the Detroit suburbs resulted in redistricting to create a new district in that region, even as Michigan lost a district overall after the census. The 11th district was represented by Thad McCotter from 2003 until his resignation on July 6, 2012. He was replaced by Democrat David Curson, who won a special election on November 6, 2012. Curson was sworn in on November 13. He was replaced by Kerry Bentivolio in January 2013, who had been elected in the regular fall elec ...
