2020 Telkom Knockout
The 2020 Telkom Knockout was due to be the 39th edition of the Telkom Knockout, a South African cup competition comprising the 16 teams in the Premier Soccer League. However, it was cancelled after the loss of sponsor Telkom. Premier Soccer League chairman Irvin Khoza described the cancellation as a "blessing in disguise," due to the relief on fixture congestion caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in South Africa. 2023 Carling Knockout Cup
The 2023 Carling Knockout Cup is the first season of the South African association football competition, the Carling Knockout Cup, under its new sponsored name. It is organised by the Premier Soccer League and Carling and runs from 21 October 2023 to 16 December 2023. This competition replaces the Telkom knockout. Because this competition is sponsored by Carling Black Label, the Carling Black Label Cup will be merged with this competition and will be played by 16 teams instead of only 4. There will be 2 trophies up for grabs, the second being the Carling Cup Match, an All-Stars match played on 6 January 2024. Telkom Knockout
The Telkom Knockout was a South African professional football knockout competition which comprised the 16 teams in the South African Premier Soccer League. The competition was established in 1982 and was first known as the Datsun Challenge. Under the new NSL regime in 1984, it became known as the ''JPS Knockout Cup''. It used this name until 1992 when it became known as the ''Coca-Cola Cup''. It was sponsored by the drinks manufacturer until 1996, when it was replaced by the ''Rothmans Cup'' which was changed back to the ''Coca-Cola Cup'' in 2001 due to the new rules regarding tobacco sponsorship in sport. Telkom became the new sponsors in 2006. In all matches there had to be a winner on the day, this will be decided if there is a winner after full-time (90 minutes). If teams are tied at full-time then extra time will be played, penalties will decide the winner if the scores are still even (there is no golden goal rule). The winner received R4 million. Irvin Khoza
Irvin Khoza (born January 27, 1948) is a South African football administrator and businessman. Nicknamed "Iron Duke / Squveve", he is the Chairman of Orlando Pirates Football Club, Chairman of the South African Premier Soccer League and by virtue of this, Vice-President of the South African Football Association. His relationship with Orlando Pirates started in 1980, when he became its secretary and owner in 1991. As the Chairman of the Premier Soccer League, he was instrumental in securing the current sponsors of the league, Absa Group Limited. He was also the Chairman of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee South Africa, after serving as the Chairman of South Africa's 2010 FIFA World Cup bid. Khoza was part of the team who secured the right to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and later became the chairman of the South African Organising Committee.
