2020 New York Excelsior Season
The 2020 New York Excelsior season was the third season of New York Excelsior's (NYXL) existence in the Overwatch League and their first under head coach Jeong "imt" Yong-cheol. New York planned to host two homestand weekends in the 2020 season at the Hammerstein Ballroom in the Manhattan Center. While the first homestand took place, all other homestand events were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Preceding offseason Organizational changes On October 21, 2019, New York parted ways with head coach Ty "Pavane" Hyun-sang, as he joined the London Spitfire as an assistant coach. Pavane had been with the team since its inception and led them to a 56–12 regular season record over his career with the team. In his replacement, New York promoted assistant coach Jeong "imt" Yong-cheol as their new head coach on November 19. Hammerstein Ballroom
The Hammerstein Ballroom is a ballroom located within the Manhattan Center at 311 West 34th Street in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. The capacity of the ballroom is dependent on the configuration of the room; it seats 2,500 people for theatrical productions and musical performances, and several thousand for events held within a central ring. The floor of the ballroom is flat. The two main balconies – which are unusually close to the ground and gently sloped – seat a total of 1,200. The third balcony has been stripped of seats and is not used. The Anthem (music Venue)
The Anthem is a music venue and auditorium in the Southwest Waterfront neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The venue opened on October 12, 2017, with a performance opened by The Struts and headlined by the Foo Fighters. The Anthem is part of The Wharf, a comprehensive redevelopment of the Southwest Waterfront area. The 57,000-square-foot venue, which cost $60 million (USD), has a movable stage and backdrop that allows capacity to vary from 2,500 to 6,000. Balconies are closer to the stage than most venues. Bang Sung-hyeon (), better known by his online alias JJonak (), is a South Korean professional esports player, best known as a competitive ''Overwatch'' player. Bang signed with the New York Excelsior (NYXL) for the inaugural season of the Overwatch League. In his time with NYXL, Bang won two stage titles and was named the league's regular season most valuable player in 2018. Following the 2021 season, Bang left the NYXL and signed with the Seoul Dynasty. Prior to the beginning of the 2022 season, he left the Dynasty due to health issues. Early life Bang "JJonak" Sung-hyeon was raised in Seoul, South Korea. He recalled having a good relationship with his parents and wanting to pursue a professional gaming career from a young age.
