2020 Latvian Higher League
The 2020 Latvian Higher League , known as the Optibet Virslīga for sponsorship reasons, was the 29th season of top-tier football in Latvia. The season began on 15 June 2020 and ended on 29 November 2020. The league winners earned a place in the UEFA Champions League and the second and third-placed clubs earned a place in the new UEFA Europa Conference League. Riga were the defending champions after winning the league the previous season. Teams The nine clubs from the previous season remained in the league and Tukums joined as champions of 1.Liga. Latvian Higher League or Virslīga is a professional football league and the top tier of association football in Latvia. Organised by the Latvian Football Federation, the Higher League is contested by 10 clubs. The full name of the league is Optibet Virslīga for sponsorship reasons since 2019. History and league format History The first all-national Latvian championship, which succeeded the Riga Football League and other regional leagues, was organized in 1927, which lasted until the Soviet occupation of Latvia in 1940. After World War II, between 1945 and 1991 the championship of Soviet Latvia was the main footballing competition in the Latvian SSR. With Latvia regaining full independence in August 1991, the newly established Latvian Football Federation (LFF) decided to reorganise its competitions within the Virslīga from 1992. FS METTA/Latvijas Universitāte
FK Metta (also called FK Metta/Latvijas Universitāte from 2007 till the end of 2018 season) is a professional Latvian football club in Riga. As of 2012 they play in the Latvian Higher League. Metta play their home games at Daugava Stadium. Until June 2018, their home venue was the Riga Hanza Secondary School Stadium. History FS Metta was officially founded on May 2, 2006, though the club had been active in youth tournaments since 2000. In 2007 FS Metta and University of Latvia (Latvijas Universitāte) merged as a senior professional team and participated in the Latvian Championship first division ( Traffic 1. līga). Artūrs Karašausks
Artūrs Karašausks (born 29 January 1992 in Riga) is a Latvian footballer, who plays for Ypsonas Krasava on Cyprus. Club career Early career As a youth player Karašausks was a member of the JFC Skonto academy. He was signed by the Latvian Higher League club JFK Olimps/RFS in January 2009, making his top flight debut at the age of 17. He scored his first goal for the club in a 1–1 league draw against SK Blāzma on 11 June 2009, being just 17 years, 4 months and 17 days old. In less than a month after Karašausks managed to score his first ever hat-trick in a 7–0 league victory over Rīgas Futbola skola. All in all he scored 10 goals in 18 league appearances and was named ''Young Player of the Year'', receiving the Ilmārs Liepiņš prize at the end of the season. Emerson Santana Deocleciano (born 27 July 1999), sometimes known as Baiano, is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a forward for Rīgas FS. Chinonso Nnamdi Offor (born 27 May 2000) is a Nigerian professional footballer who plays as a striker for Arda Kardzhali. Club career Offor was born on 27 May 2000 in Jos, Nigeria but grew up in Ekwulobia in Anambra after having fled Jos due to riots. In 2012, he began playing for Real Sapphire in Lagos. The Latvian First League ( lv, Latvijas Pirmā līga, 1. līga) is the second tier of football in Latvia and is organised by the Latvian Football Federation. History The league was founded together with other Latvian football competitions in 1992.
