2020 LFF I Lyga
The 2020 LFF I Lyga is the 31st season of the I Lyga, the second tier football league of Lithuania. The season was planned to begin in March, but was delayed to June because of COVID-19 pandemic. The season finished on time on 31 October. Teams Team changes The last-placed A Lyga team is normally relegated to I Lyga. Since FC Stumbras had gone out of business in July 2019, no team was relegated from A Lyga in 2019. The 7th placed team in A Lyga contests a play-off match with 2nd placed I Lyga team. In this play-off match FK Banga Gargždai beat A Lyga side FC Palanga to claim a spot in the A Lyga. Licensing Process Ultimately, the licensing process determines clubs eligibility to contest in the respective league in Lithuanian football. I Lyga
The I Lyga, LFF I Lyga, Pirma Lyga, is the second tier of professional Lithuanian football championship. Format Organized by the Lithuanian Football Federation (LFF), I Lyga is contested by 14-16 teams, with the top team gaining promotion to A Lyga and replaced by the lowest-placed team in top division and the bottom 4 clubs being relegated to the II Lyga. Starting with the 2016 season, the second-placed team qualifies to promotion play-offs with A Lyga's next-to-last team. The final list of participants often does not correlate to the final results of the previous season, as the participation is finalized through the Lithuanian Football Federation league licensing process. History There were 15 teams competing in the 2017 season. At the end of this season, three teams withdrew from all competitions. In 2018, there were 14 teams that started the championship. Futbolo klubas Hegelmann, commonly known as Hegelmann, is a Lithuanian football club located in Kaunas. They play in the A Lyga, the first tier of Lithuanian football. History The club was founded at the beginning of 2009 by Hegelmann Transporte, a German-owned freight forwarding and logistics company. ''Hegelmann'' refers to the family name of Anton Hegelmann and ''Litauen'' means Lithuania in German. After promotion from II Lyga in 2018, the club took 7th place in 2019 LFF I Lyga. II Lyga
Lithuanian Football Federation's II lyga, LFF II lyga – the third tier Lithuanian football championship. As of 2021, the II lyga is a single league, consisting of planned 16 teams. The two top teams gain promotion to the I Lyga. Until the end of 2020 season the league consisted of the Southern Zone and the Western Zone. The Northern Zone and the Eastern Zone existed in some past seasons, but were done away with due to the dwindling number of participating clubs. League Structure Southern Zone The zone has existed since 1999 until 2020. Kaunas County Football Federation was in charge of the competition in this zone. Eastern Zone The zone existed in 2015 and 2016, however, due to a club mass withdrawal from the competition, the zone was done away with, and the remaining clubs joined the Southern Zone. Futbolo klubas Žalgiris, commonly known as FK Žalgiris, Žalgiris Vilnius or simply Žalgiris, is a Lithuanian professional football club based in Vilnius. They currently play in the I Lyga, the second tier of Lithuanian football. FK Atmosfera is a phoenix club of Atmosfera Mažeikiai. History Mažeikiai has a deep history of football. Since the mid-20th century, there was a football club that competed at the top tier of the Lithuanian SSR football league, achieving two championship titles during that time. Football Club Jonava, previously (1996–2016) known as Football Club Lietava, is a Lithuanian professional association football, football club based in Jonava. The club gained promotion to the A lyga as champions of the I Lyga in 2015 LFF I lyga, 2015, but were relegated from A Lyga in 2018. History The club was founded in 1991 as Azotas (after the name of the local Azotas fertilizer factory), the name Lietava was adopted in 1996. FK Minija is a semi-professional Association football, football club based in Kretinga, Lithuania. The team competes in I Lyga, the second division of Football in Lithuania, Lithuanian football system. History After FK Minija Kretinga went bankrupt at the end of 2016 season, the Kretinga football promoters formed a Phoenix club (sports), phoenix club at the beginning of 2017. Futbolo Klubas Vilnius or FK Vilnius is a Lithuanian football club based in Vilnius. It plays its home matches at the Fabijoniškių gimnazijos Stadium. History FK Vilnius club as an entity was founded in January 2019. The club created a venture with Baltijos Futbolo Akademija (BFA), which had been participating in I Lyga. Baltijos Futbolo Akademija, BFA is a Lithuanian football club based in Vilnius, established as an extension of the youth football academy. History The football academy was established in 2007. The club has been participating in the Children and Youth Football Championships organized by the Lithuanian Football Federation as well as international football tournaments. The club has been organizing football tournaments in Vilnius. 2018 The BFA team took part in the LFF II lyga championship for the first time.
