The University of Canberra Capitals are an Australian professional women's basketball team competing in the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL). The team is based in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory. In 2014 the University of Canberra Union took control of the Capitals from Basketball ACT. The University of Canberra is the current naming rights sponsor for the Capitals. History Founded in 1984, the Capitals first competed in the WNBL in the 1986 season after winning the Australian Women's Basketball Conference in 1985. Leilani Mitchell
Leilani Seamah Mitchell (born June 15, 1985) is an American-Australian professional basketball player who is currently a free agent. Mitchell was drafted 25th overall by the Phoenix Mercury in the 2008 WNBA draft. A dual citizen of the United States and Australia, she is a member of Australian women's national basketball team (the Opals). In 2019 Mitchell became the first WNBA player to win the Most Improved Player Award twice. Mitchell was a member of the Australian Women's basketball team (Opals) at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Lindsay Allen (born March 20, 1995 in Clinton, Maryland) is an American professional basketball player for the Minnesota Lynx of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). She played basketball at the University of Notre Dame. Allen was drafted in the second round (14th overall) of the 2017 WNBA Draft by the Liberty. Professional career Allen was drafted early in the second round by the Liberty but she was the final cut as the Liberty cut down their roster to the limit. Because she was cut, she was able to finish her final week of college and participate in the graduation ceremonies. Kelsey Michelle Griffin (born July 2, 1987) is an American-Australian professional women's basketball player. She was drafted 3rd overall in the 2010 WNBA Draft. Griffin played college basketball with the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Griffin was named to many All-America teams and was the winner of the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. Griffin is currently playing for the University of Canberra Capitals in the Australian WNBL. Kia Nurse (born February 22, 1996) is a Canadian basketball player for the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA. She is also a basketball analyst featured on TSN. Nurse has played for the Canada Women's National Basketball team. She was selected to play in the 2020 Summer Olympics. AIS Arena
AIS Arena is a multi-purpose arena in Canberra, Australia. Its capacity is 5,200 and it was built in 1980. The arena was opened by the Prime Minister of Australia, Malcolm Fraser, on 26 January 1981 and was originally named the National Indoor Sports Centre and was the inaugural home of the Australian Institute of Sport. History The arena was designed by Philip Cox & Partners. Architectural features include a 1200 tonne suspended concrete panel roof supported by 12 steel masts and 36 mainstay cables. The roof has a span of 100.4 metres. The stadium is partly set into the ground to reduce its scale and to establish a visual connection between the landscape and the mast and cable structure of the roof. College Seekamp played college basketball at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, South Dakota for the Coyotes. After sitting out the 2011–12 season as a redshirt, Seekamp made her debut in 2012. Adelaide Arena (known commercially as Adelaide 36ers Arena) is a multipurpose indoor sports stadium located in Findon, an inner western suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It is the former home arena for the Adelaide 36ers of the NBL and the current home arena of the Adelaide Lightning of the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL).
