2019 Visayas Earthquake
The 2019 Eastern Samar Earthquake struck the islands of Visayas in the Philippines on April 23, 2019 at 1:37:51 PM(PHT).It had a moment magnitude of 6.5 and a local magnitude of 6.2 with a max intensity of VI based on the PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale(PEIS). The epicenter was in San Julian, Eastern Samar and the hypocenter was at a depth of 64 km(~39.76 mi). As of April 30, 2019 there were 172 aftershocks ranging from magnitudes of 1.6 to 4.6. The earthquake injure 48 people and damaged about 245 homes. Eastern Samar is located near an active subduction zone, the Philippine trench, where the Philippine Sea plate subducts beneath the Sunda plate, and movement along the trench is what caused the earthquake. The earthquake struck less than a day after another magnitude 6.1 earthquake in Luzon, but it was found that these earthquakes were unrelated. San Julian, Eastern Samar
San Julian, officially the Municipality of San Julian ( war, Bungto han San Julian; tl, Bayan ng San Julian), is a 5th class municipality in the province of Eastern Samar, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 14,800 people. History The Parish/Township of San Julian owes its origin to the Pre-Spanish settlement of Libas. When the Jesuits started evangelizing the inhabitants on the eastern littoral of Samar Island in early 17th century. Libas was already a small settlement, although the term village could not be applied to it. The houses were far removed from each other and the place was without street. It was simply a group of houses dotted near the mouth of Libas river. 2012 Samar Earthquake
An earthquake off the coast of Samar occurred on August 31, 2012, at 20:47 local time (12:47 UTC) in the Philippines. The populated islands of Visayas were struck by an earthquake of magnitude 7.6. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 45 km (27.9 miles). A tsunami warning was announced within the Pacific area and was lifted after two hours. The Philippine archipelago is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, where earthquakes and volcanic activity are common. Geology The Philippine Mobile Belt is between the Eurasia Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate. The Philippine Sea Plate is subducting along the Philippine Trench in this region. 2012 Visayas Earthquake
The 2012 Negros earthquake occurred on February 6 at , with a body wave magnitude of 6.7 and a maximum intensity of VII (''Destructive'') off the coast of Negros Oriental, Philippines. The epicenter of the thrust fault earthquake was approximately north of the provincial capital of Dumaguete City. Earthquake The recorded intensities according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on the Earthquake Intensity Scale (PEIS) were VII in Dumaguete and V in Cebu. The earthquake was felt as far as Mindanao in the provinces of Misamis and Lanao as well as Iligan. Tacloban
Tacloban ( ; ), officially the City of Tacloban ( war, Syudad han Tacloban; fil, Lungsod ng Tacloban), is a first class highly urbanized city in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines. The Leyte Provincial Capitol was the seat of government of the Philippine province of Leyte (province), Leyte until 2019. The historic building situated in Tacloban also served as the temporary national capitol in 1944 to 1945 during the World War II era. 2019 Luzon Earthquake
On April 22, 2019, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck the island of Luzon in the Philippines, leaving at least 18 dead, three missing and injuring at least 256 others. Despite the fact that the epicenter was in Zambales, most of the damage to infrastructure occurred in the neighboring province of Pampanga, which suffered damage to 29 buildings and structures. The Sunda Plate is a minor tectonic plate straddling the Equator in the Eastern Hemisphere on which the majority of Southeast Asia is located.
