2019 Richmond Kickers Season
The 2019 Richmond Kickers season was the club's 27th season of existence, their 15th season in the third tier of American soccer, and their first season in the newly-created USL League One. It was the Kickers' first season playing in the third tier of American soccer since 2016, when they were in the United Soccer League. The season covers the period from October 14, 2018 to the beginning of the 2020 USL League One season. Roster Non-competitive Preseason On January 19, 2019, the Kickers revealed their preseason schedule. Richmond played seven matches in the span of just over a month, including five games against collegiate programs and two games against clubs from the USL Championship. All six games took place in the state of Virginia, with the Kickers playing host to five of those games; just one, however, was played at City Stadium. Richmond Kickers
Richmond Kickers is an American professional soccer club based in Richmond, Virginia. The Kickers compete as a member of USL League One (USL-1). The club was established in 1993, and began play that same year as a United States Interregional Soccer League (now USL League Two) expansion team, which at the time, was the fourth tier of soccer in the United States. The club's majority owner is 22 Holdings, LLC, and its minority owners are Richmond Kickers Youth Soccer Club and the Ukrop family, a prominent family from the Greater Richmond Region who founded the Ukrop's grocery chain. The company serves as the club's primary uniform sponsor. Darren Sawatzky has been the club's manager since 2019, taking over for the late-David Bulow. Joe Rice (born March 6, 1996) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a goalkeeper for Colorado Springs Switchbacks in the USL Championship. Career Rice played college soccer at Virginia Commonwealth University between 2014 and 2018, where he spent a year redshirted and only made six appearances for the Rams. While at college, Rice appeared in the National Premier Soccer League with Chesterfield United and Virginia Beach City, as well as with USL PDL side Lionsbridge FC. Wahab Ackwei (born 19 October 1996) is a Ghanaian professional footballer who plays as a defender for USL Championship club Rio Grande Valley FC. Elijah "Eli" Lockaby (born December 18, 1995) is an American former professional soccer player who last played as a defender or midfielder for USL League One club Forward Madison FC. Career Youth and college Lockaby played college soccer for Virginia Commonwealth University. He was redshirted his freshman year, and his final four years of eligibility was a starter. Conor Shanosky (born December 13, 1991) is an American former professional soccer player who played as a defender. Early life Shanosky was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; he grew up in Sterling, Virginia. Professional career D.C. United Shanosky signed a professional contract with D.C. Ivan Magalhães dos Santos (born 23 December 1993) is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a defender. Career College and amateur Magalhães played two years of college soccer at Eastern Florida State College between 2013 and 2014, before transferring to the University of Maryland in 2015. Scott Thomsen (born December 31, 1993) is a former American professional soccer player who played for USL League One club Richmond Kickers as a defender. Career Early career Thomsen attended Christian Brothers Academy during high school and earned state and regional honors as a member of the soccer team. In 2010, Thomsen joined the New York Red Bulls academy, where he played primarily as a midfielder, and scored 27 goals during his five-year career.
