2019 Montgomery Mayoral Election
The 2019 Montgomery mayoral election took place on August 28 and October 8, 2019, to elect the Mayor of Montgomery, Alabama. Incumbent Republican Mayor Todd Strange, who had been elected to three full terms as mayor, did not seek re-election to a fourth full term in office. The election was officially nonpartisan. With no candidate receiving a majority of the vote, a runoff election was held between the top two candidates. Two candidates, Montgomery County Probate Judge Steven Reed and businessman David Woods, made it to the October 8 runoff, with Reed winning the runoff. Steven Reed (mayor)
Steven L. Reed (born 1974) is an American jurist and politician serving as the Mayor of Montgomery, Alabama. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as a probate judge in Montgomery County. Early life and education Steven L. Reed was born in Montgomery, Alabama to Joe and Mollie Reed (née Perry) as one of three children. His father, Joe, served as one of the first class of elected members of the Montgomery City Council from 1975 to 1999. Steven Reed earned a Bachelor of Arts from Morehouse College and a Master of Business Administration from Vanderbilt University. The ''Montgomery Advertiser'' is a daily newspaper and news website located in Montgomery, Alabama. It was founded in 1829. History The newspaper began publication in 1829 as ''The Planter's Gazette.'' Its first editor was Moseley Baker. It became the ''Montgomery Advertiser'' in 1833. In 1903, Richard F. Hudson Sr., a young Alabama newspaperman, joined the staff of the ''Advertiser'' and rose through the ranks of the newspaper. Hudson was central to improving the financial situation of the newspaper, and by 1924 he owned 10% of its stock. Hudson purchased the remaining shares of the company in 1935, and five years later he bought the '' Alabama Journal'', a competitor founded in Montgomery in 1889. Artur Genestre Davis (; born October 9, 1967) is an American attorney and former politician who served as a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives for from 2003 to 2011. He was also a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Governor of Alabama in the 2010 election. After losing in the primary, he moved to Virginia and joined the Republican Party.
