2019 Guatemala City Mayoral Election
The 2019 Guatemala City mayoral election was held on 16 June 2019. The elections will be held next to the 2019 Guatemalan general election, presidential, legislative, municipal and Central American Parliament elections. Twenty-three candidates were presented. The current mayor Ricardo Quiñónez took office after the death of Álvaro Arzú, and is presented for the first time as a candidate for mayor and maintain the hegemony of the Unionist Party (Guatemala), Unionist Party in Guatemala City. The polls show a close contest between the opposition candidate Roberto González Díaz-Durán from the Commitment, Renewal and Order (CREO), which competes for the third time to win the mayor's office and the current mayor Ricardo Quiñónez Lemus of Unionist Party (Guatemala), Unionist Party. Ricardo Quiñónez Lemus (; born 5 January 1965) is a Guatemalan politician who has been serving as mayor of Guatemala City since 30 April 2018, after the death of Álvaro Arzú. Previously he served as first-Councillor, councilor of the municipality from 2008 until 2018. Early life and education Ricardo Quiñónez is son of María Magdalena Lemus Aguilar and the lawyer Ricardo Alfonso Quiñónez Sandoval, who was a representative of Pan American airlines. He has three siblings, Alfonso José, María Gabriela del Rosario, and Carmen Lucía. His grandfather and namesake was Interior and Foreign Minister during the government of Carlos Castillo Armas. His family and connections have been historically right wing.
