The 2019 Down Senior Hurling Championship was the 111th staging of the Down Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Down County Board in 1903. St Joseph's GAA Club, Ballycran is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Rubane, County Down, Northern Ireland. The club is exclusively concerned with hurling and camogie. Gary Savage (hurler)
Gary Savage (born 1970 in Ballycran, County Down) is an Irish sportsman. He played hurling with his local club Ballycran and was a member of the Down senior inter-county team from the 1990s until the 2000s. Playing career Club Savage played his hurling with his local club in Ballycran and enjoyed much success. He first came to prominence on the club’s senior team in the late 1980s, however, Ballycran were going through a hugely unsuccessful period at the time, after losing five county finals in-a-row. Savage won his first county senior championship winners’ medal in 1993, following a defeat of Ballygalget. He later lined out in the Ulster club final with Cushendall providing the opposition. A 2-10 to 0-12 victory gave Savage his first Ulster club winners’ medal. Ballycran were subsequently defeated by Toomevara in the All-Ireland semi-final. Portaferry GAA
Portaferry GAC ( ga, Port An Pheire) is a GAA Club in the East of Down in the Ards Peninsula. It is one of three Senior Hurling Clubs in Down, the other two being Ballygalget GAA and Ballycran GAA. History The depth of the hurling tradition in the Ards can be gauged from the fact that the game was first played on the Peninsula as early as 1900 by Portaferry Carraig Uladh. But it was Ned Purcell, an agricultural inspector from Tipperary, who laid the real foundations between 1912 and 1917. His influence not only left Portaferry with the Tipp colours, but also Tipperary skills and love of the game. Locals such as John Emerson, John McCullough, John and Eddie Dumigan and Fr Toal carried on where Ned left off and such was the interest that 4 teams from Portaferry competed in the Ards Gaelic Association during the early Twenties. Down Senior Hurling Championship
The Down Senior Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Morgan Fuels Down GAA Senior Hurling Championship and abbreviated to the Down SHC) is an annual hurling competition contested by top-tier Down GAA clubs. The Down County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1903. Ballycran are the title holders (2021) defeating Portaferry in the Final after extra time. History Faugh-a-Ballagh won the inaugural Down SHC in 1903. The competition has been won by 10 teams, 9 of which have won it more than once. Ballycran is the most successful team in the tournament's history, having won it 27 times. No team outside Ballycran, Portaferry and Ballygalget have won the title since Kilclief's 23rd victory in 1956. The Down County Board ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Coiste Chontae An Dún) or Down GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) in Ireland, and is responsible for the administration of Gaelic games in County Down, Northern Ireland. The County Board is responsible for preparing the Down county teams in the various Gaelic sporting codes; football, hurling, camogie and handball. The county football team was the second from the province of Ulster to win an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC), following Cavan, and also the first team from Northern Ireland to win the Sam Maguire Cup since partition, doing so in 1960.
