2019 Derry City And Strabane District Council Election
The 2019 election to the Derry City and Strabane District Council, part of the Northern Ireland local elections on 2 May 2019, returned 40 members to the council via Single Transferable Vote. Derry City and Strabane District Council ( ga, Comhairle Chathair Dhoire agus Cheantar an tSratha Báin; Ulster-Scots: ''Derry Cittie & Stràbane Destrìck Cooncil'') is the local authority for Derry and Strabane district in Northern Ireland. It was created as part of the 2014 Northern Ireland local government reform, replacing Derry City Council and Strabane District Council. The first elections to the authority were on 22 May 2014 and it acted as a shadow authority to its two predecessors until the new district formally came into being on 1 April 2015. The name was changed from Derry and Strabane City Council on 24 February 2016. Gary Donnelly (Irish Republican)
Gary Donnelly is an Irish republican politician, former Real Irish Republican Army (Real IRA) prisoner, and an elected member of the Derry and Strabane District Council. Republican activity Donnelly is a member of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement (32CSM) and formerly the Real IRA. Arrests and convictions In March 2010, Donnelly was convicted of assaulting a Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officer and sentenced to seven months imprisonment. While serving his sentence Donnelly briefly went on hunger strike following his removal from the republican wing of HM Prison Maghaberry. Prison officials explained the decision claiming Donnelly had received a death threat from the Real IRA, a charge Donnelly denied. In August 2010 Donnelly was charged under the auspices of "terrorism legislation" in connection with three pipe bomb attacks in September 2009. Maurice Devenney
Alderman Maurice Devenney (born 1 January 1959) is a Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) politician who served as a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for Foyle from 2014 to 2015. Devenney succeeded retiring party member William Hay. He resigned in April 2015 to concentrate on his council work. Allan Bresland
Allan Bresland (born 16 August 1945) is a former Unionist politician from Northern Ireland representing the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). Bresland was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for West Tyrone from 2007 to 2011. He was educated at Ballylaw Primary School, is a retired lorry driver with the Water Service and was first elected to Strabane District Council in 1993, representing the Glenelly area. He is a member of various bodies including the Drainage Council of Northern Ireland and is current chair of the Western Group Environmental Health Committee. Maolíosa McHugh ( , ) is a Sinn Féin politician from County Tyrone, Northern Ireland who has served as Member of the Legislative Assembly for the West Tyrone constituency in the Northern Ireland Assembly since 28 May 2019. Cara Hunter MLA (born 8 November 1995) is an Irish Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) politician, currently serving as a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for East Londonderry, a position she has held since 18 May 2020.
