2019 Cork County Council Election
A Cork County Council election was held in County Cork in Ireland on 24 May 2019 as part of that year's local elections. All 55 councillors were elected for a five-year term of office from 10 local electoral areas (LEAs) by single transferable vote. This election coincides with a transfer of land around Cork city from the administration of the County Council to that of Cork City Council. Several outgoing county councillors, based in areas transferred to the city, are standing in the city council election. Compared to the previous election in 2014, the total number of councillors is unchanged, but following the recommendation of the 2018 Boundary Committee, there were significant changes to the LEAs, taking account of the transfer of land to the city, a maximum of 7 seats per LEA in its terms of reference, and population shifts revealed by the 2016 census. 2019 Cork Boundary Change
The boundary between Cork city and County Cork, under the local jurisdiction of Cork City Council and Cork County Council respectively, was changed in mid 2019 when the Local Government Act 2018 came into force after the 2019 local elections, with the city area quadrupling in size. Its implementation followed the Cork Local Government Review, a 2015 review by the Cork Local Government Committee which recommended merging the two councils into a single "super-council". The recommendation was unpopular within the city and in 2017, after a review, it was dropped in favour of extending the city boundary into territory of the county. This alternative was not approved by county council, which meant the Fine Gael-led government was obliged to pass an Act of the Oireachtas to effect it. Bandon, County Cork
Bandon (; ) is a town in County Cork, Ireland. It lies on the River Bandon between two hills. The name in Irish means 'Bridge of the Bandon', a reference to the origin of the town as a crossing point on the river. In 2004 Bandon celebrated its quatercentenary. The town, sometimes called the Gateway to West Cork, had a population of 6,957 at the 2016 census. Bandon is in the Cork South-West ( Dﾃ｡il ﾃ永reann) constituency, which has three seats. History In September 1588, at the start of the Plantation of Munster, Phane Beecher of London acquired, as Undertaker, the seignory of Castlemahon. ﾃ（ne Collins (born 9 September 1969) is a former Irish Fine Gael politician who served as a Teachta Dﾃ｡la (TD) for the Cork North-West constituency from 2011 to 2016. Early life & business ventures Collins was raised on a farm in north County Cork. She credits this as her inspiration, saying: "I grew up on a small farm where my father used to grow cabbage and sell it. I think from an early age I was part of that practice where you were involved in producing something." She bought a small-town pub and became involved in the restaurant trade. Macroom
Macroom (; ga, Maigh Chromtha) is a market town in County Cork, Ireland, located in the valley of the River Sullane, halfway between Cork city and Killarney. Its population has grown and receded over the centuries as it went through periods of war, famine and workhouses, forced emigration and intermittent prosperity. The 2011 census gave an urban population of 3,879 people, while the 2016 census recorded 3,765 people. Macroom began as a meeting place for the druids of Munster. Gerard Murphy (born 25 March 1951) is an Irish Fine Gael politician who has served as a Cork County Councillor since May 2009. He previously served as a Teachta Dﾃ｡la (TD) for the Cork North-West constituency from 2002 to 2007. Murphy was elected to the 29th Dail at the 2002 general election, ousting his Fine Gael running-mate, three-term TD Michael Creed. He was Fine Gael's deputy spokesperson on Justice. Kanturk
Kanturk () is a town in the north west of County Cork, Ireland. It is situated at the confluence of the Allua (Allow) and Dallow (Dalua) rivers, which stream further on as tributaries to the River Blackwater. Fermoy () is a town on the River Blackwater in east County Cork, Ireland. As of the 2016 census, the town and environs had a population of approximately 6,500 people. Sinﾃｩad Sheppard is an Irish politician and dancing tutor, and former member of the pop group Six. She rose to fame in the 2001–02 RTﾃ One television series ''Popstars'', in which she was selected as a member of the group. Cobh
Cobh ( ,), known from 1849 until 1920 as Queenstown, is a seaport town on the south coast of County Cork, Ireland. With a population of around 13,000 inhabitants, Cobh is on the south side of Great Island in Cork Harbour and home to Ireland's only dedicated cruise terminal. Carrigaline
Carrigaline () is a town and civil parish in County Cork, Ireland, situated on the River Owenabue. Located about south of Cork city, and with a population of 15,770 people, it is one of the largest commuter towns of the city. The R611 regional road passes through the town, and it is just off the N28 national primary route to Ringaskiddy. Carrigaline grew rapidly in the late 20th century, from a village of a few hundred people into a thriving commuter town although some locals still refer to it as "the village". Noel Harrington (born 24 December 1970) is an Irish former Fine Gael politician who served as a Teachta Dﾃ｡la (TD) for the Cork South-West constituency from 2011 to 2016.
