2019 Catalan General Strike
The 2019 Catalan general strike, also known as 18-O, was a general strike held by Catalan separatists on 18 October 2019, on the fifth night of the 2019 protests following the verdict against Catalonia independence leaders for their participation in a referendum on independence two years earlier. Strikes for political reasons are not allowed by Spanish law. The main labor unions in the country, UGT and CCOO, did not participate. The Guardian
''The Guardian'' is a British daily newspaper. It was founded in 1821 as ''The Manchester Guardian'', and changed its name in 1959. Along with its sister papers ''The Observer'' and ''The Guardian Weekly'', ''The Guardian'' is part of the Guardian Media Group, owned by the Scott Trust. Catalan Independence Movement
The Catalan independence movement ( ca, independentisme català; Spanish: ''independentismo catalán'') is a social and political movement (with roots in Catalan nationalism) which seeks the independence of Catalonia from Spain. The beginnings of separatism in Catalonia can be traced back to regionalist and nationalist movements of the mid–19th century, influenced by romantic ideas widespread in Europe at the time. The first organised Catalan independence party was Estat Català (Catalan State), founded in 1922 by Francesc Macià.
