2019 Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council Election
The 2019 Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council election took place on 2 May 2019 to elect members of Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council in England. This was on the same day as other local elections. One councillor was elected in each ward for a four-year term so the councillors elected in 2019 last stood for election in 2015. Each ward is represented by three councillors, the election of which is staggered, so only one third of the councillors were elected in this election. Before the election there was no overall control with a minority Labour administration. Following the election Labour, having gained four councillors, took control of the council with an overall majority of five seats. In May 2019 Councillor Colin Peel defected from the Conservative Party to Change UK. After the dissolution of the party he retained his seat as an independent councillor. Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council
Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council is the local authority of the Metropolitan Borough of Calderdale in West Yorkshire, England. The council styles itself Calderdale Council. It is a metropolitan district council, one of five in West Yorkshire and one of 36 in the metropolitan counties of England, and provides the majority of local government services in Calderdale. Since 1 April 2014 it has been a constituent council of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority. Premises The council is based at Halifax Town Hall, which had been built for one of the council's predecessors, the Halifax Borough Council, in 1863. Scott Benton (politician)
Scott Lloyd Benton (born 1 July 1987) is the Member of Parliament for Blackpool South, holding office since the 2019 United Kingdom general election. A member of the Conservative Party, he was previously a councillor on Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council. On 5 April 2023 Benton had the Conservative Party whip suspended while the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards investigates a fake lobbying role he was offered by reporters from ''The Times''. Early life and education Benton was born in Newport, Wales, to Alan and Krystina Benton. He grew up in Rastrick, West Yorkshire, and attended Rastrick High School. He studied theology as an undergraduate at the University of Nottingham and was awarded a first Bachelor of Arts degree and also later completed a Master of Arts degree in the subject. Calderdale is a metropolitan borough of West Yorkshire, England, whose population in 2020 was 211,439. It takes its name from the River Calder, and dale, a word for valley. The name Calderdale usually refers to the borough through which the upper river flows, while the actual landform is known as the Calder Valley. Local elections in parts of the United Kingdom were held on Thursday 2 May 2019, with 248 English local councils, six directly elected mayors in England, and all 11 local councils in Northern Ireland being contested. A total of 8,886 councillors were elected: terms were up for 8,861 seats, but eight elections for a total of 14 seats were postponed due to the death of a candidate; there were also casual vacancies to be filled: 38 in England (including on nine councils with no other elections) and one on Dundee City Council in Scotland. With the exception of areas whose electoral cycle has temporarily changed (due to a boundary review) or permanently changed, or that have been reorganised, the seats up for election in England were last contested in the 2015 local elections, on the same day as the general election of that year. The Independent Group for Change, also known as Change UK, was a British centrist, pro-European Union political party, founded in February 2019 and dissolved ten months later, shortly after all its MPs lost their seats in the 2019 general election.
