2019 Birmingham Legion FC Season
The 2019 Birmingham Legion FC season is the club's inaugural season and their first in the USL Championship, the second tier of American soccer. The season covers the period from the founding of the club to the start of the 2020 USL Championship season. Roster Non-competitive Preseason Although Legion FC officially announced just one preseason game, the matchup against Nashville SC on February 16, the club wound up playing a four-game preseason schedule ahead of its inaugural season. Two of the four games were against fellow USL Championship clubs, with one fixture against a team from Major League Soccer and one against a USL League One opponent. The first two preseason matches saw Birmingham as the road team, with Legion FC hosting the final two games at BBVA Field. Birmingham Legion FC is an American professional soccer club based in Birmingham, Alabama, that competes in the USL Championship, the second division of American soccer. The team was established in August 2013 and played under the name Birmingham Hammers until 2018 and began their first professional season as Legion FC on March 10, 2019. History On August 9, 2017, the United Soccer League (now known as USL Championship), the Division II sanctioned league by the United States Soccer Federation, granted a team for Birmingham to begin play in the 2019 season. On January 17, 2018, the team name was revealed as Birmingham Legion FC, a reference to the historic Legion Field that opened in 1927. However, the team instead played at BBVA Field, the home of the UAB Blazers soccer program. Joe Nasco
Joseph Nasco (born June 18, 1984) is an American professional soccer player. Career After spending time in Andrew College and Birmingham–Southern College, Nasco made eight appearances for Panama City Pirates in the USL Premier Development League. However, he left the game shortly after battling injury and took a job as a police officer for the Gordon County Sheriff's Department in Calhoun, Georgia. In 2012, Nasco caught an eye of the Atlanta Silverbacks coaching staff at the team's first open combine and on March 21, Nasco signed a professional contract with the Silverbacks.
