2018 Welsh Labour Party Deputy Leadership Election
The 2018 Welsh Labour Party deputy leadership election took place from 16 February to 21 April 2018. It followed a review in the Welsh Labour Party which for the first time formalised the role of Deputy Leader. As the then leader Carwyn Jones was male, only women were eligible to stand for the role of deputy. On 21 April 2018, Swansea MP Carolyn Harris was elected as Deputy Leader. Voting system The election was conducted under an Electoral College system in which Labour Party members, affiliated trade union members and Welsh Labour elected officials all held an equal share of the votes. Based on the turnout figures, Welsh Labour has approximately 25,000 individual members and 76,400 affiliated union members, as well as 58 elected officials (29 AMs, 28 MPs and 1 MEP). Affiliated Trade Union
In British politics, an affiliated trade union is one that is linked to the Labour Party. The party was created by the trade unions and socialist societies in 1900 as the Labour Representation Committee and the unions have retained close institutional links with it. Affiliated unions pay an annual fee to the Labour Party; in return, they elect thirteen of the thirty-nine members of Labour's National Executive Committee and fifty per cent of the delegates to Labour Party Conference. Local union branches also affiliate to Constituency Labour Parties and their members who are also individual members of the Party may represent the union as delegates on Labour Party structures. Individual members may ''opt out'' of paying into a union's political fund which is used to finance the affiliation. Mike Hedges (politician)
Michael John Hedges MS (born 8 July 1956) is a Welsh Labour politician, who been the Member of the Senedd (MS) for the constituency of Swansea East since the 2011 Senedd election. Personal life Hedges has lived in Morriston for many years but was born in the Plasmarl area of Swansea. He is married to Anne and has a daughter, Catrin, who attends Ysgol Gyfun Bryntawe. He attended Plasmarl, Parklands and Penlan Schools, and went on to higher education at Swansea University and Cardiff University. Sir David George Hanson (born 5 July 1957) is a British Labour Party (UK), Labour Party politician who served as the Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament (MP) for Delyn (UK Parliament constituency), Delyn from 1992 to 2019. Chris Elmore
Christopher Philip James Elmore (born 23 December 1983) is a Welsh Labour Party politician. He has been Member of Parliament (MP) for Ogmore since 2016. Early life and career Elmore was born in Newport and lived in Brynmawr and in Caerphilly as a child. He started his working life as a trainee butcher and later attended Cardiff Metropolitan University completing a degree in History and Culture in 2005. Susan Elan Jones (born 1 June 1968) is a former British Labour Party politician, who was elected at the 2010 general election as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Clwyd South, replacing the previous Labour MP Martyn Jones after his retirement. Wayne David MP (born 1 July 1957) is a British politician who has served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Caerphilly since 2001. Ann Clwyd Roberts (; born 21 March 1937) is a Welsh Labour Party politician who served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Cynon Valley for 35 years, from 1984 until 2019.
