2018 Valencia, Venezuela Fire
On March 28, 2018, a fire broke out during a prison riot in the cells at the Carabobo state police headquarters in Valencia, Carabobo, Venezuela. The fire killed at least 68 people and injured scores of others. The fire is one of the deadliest incidents ever in a Venezuelan prison since the 1994 Sabaneta prison fire, in which more than 100 inmates died. Four prosecutors have been named to investigate the circumstances preceding the victims' deaths. The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights requested an investigation and reparations for the families of the fire victims. Background Violence and overcrowding are problems in Venezuela's prison system. The Observatorio Venezolano de Prisiones (English: ''Venezuelan Observatory of Prisons'') estimates that 6,663 prisoners have died between 1999 and 2015, with average overcrowding at over 200%. 2020 Cagua Fire
On 23 January 2020, a fire was started in the ''Agrícola del Lago'' reed bed in Cagua, Aragua state, Venezuela. Eleven people were confirmed to have died as a result of the fire, all but two being minors. Fire The fire started in Cagua on 23 January 2020, around 13:00 local time ( VET), at the ''Agrícola del Lago'' reed bed sugarcane plantation, located in a popular extraction zone in the La Carpiera sector, in Cagua, Aragua state. Guanare Prison Riot
The Guanare prison riot, also known as the Guanare massacre, occurred in the Los Llanos prison (known as ''Cepella'') in Guanare, Portuguesa state, Venezuela, on 1 May 2020. The events caused around 47 deaths, and 75 people were injured. Background According to the BBC, Venezuelan prisons saw an increase in riots during the COVID-19 pandemic. Acarigua Prison Riot
A group of inmates were involved in a prison riot on 24 May 2019 in the police station cellblocks in Acarigua, Portuguesa state, Venezuela. The riot allegedly began when inmate Wilfredo Ramos was killed following ten days of protests against the denial of visits by relatives. Background Prisons in Venezuela are largely overpopulated; many prisons are supposedly under gang control and subject to violence. However, the prison of this uprising was actually the holding cells of the police headquarters at Centro de Coordinación Policial José Antonio Páez (PoliPáez).
