2018 Swindon Borough Council Election
The 2018 Swindon Borough Council election took place on 3 May 2018, to elect members of Swindon Borough Council in England. This was on the same day as other local elections. The Conservatives held on to their majority on the council but it was lowered to one after losing a councillor to the Liberal Democrats in Wroughton & Wichelstowe. The Liberal Democrats lost a councillor to Labour in Eastcott, so the election's net gain of one was to Labour from the Conservatives. Labour had had high hopes of winning control of the council, and the Party's leader Jeremy Corbyn had visited Swindon on five occasions during the local election campaign. The Party was reported to be 'deeply disappointed' with the result. Swindon () is a town and unitary authority with borough status in Wiltshire, England. As of the 2021 Census, the population of Swindon was 201,669, making it the largest town in the county. The Swindon unitary authority area had a population of 233,410 as of 2021. Located in South West England, the town lies between Bristol, 35 miles (56 kilometres) to its west, and Reading, equidistant to its east. 2018 United Kingdom Local Elections
Council elections in England were held on Thursday 3 May 2018. Elections were held in all 32 London boroughs, 34 metropolitan boroughs, 67 district and borough councils and 17 unitary authorities. There were also direct elections for the mayoralties of Hackney, Lewisham, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Watford. With the exception of those areas that have had boundary changes, the seats up for election were last contested in the 2014 local elections.
