2018 New York State Assembly Election
Elections to the New York State Assembly were held on November 6, 2018 along with elections for the State Senate, Governor, and U.S. Senator, among others. The Democrats retained their majority with no net change in seats from 2016. Eight seats changed hands, four from Republican to Democrat and four from Democrat to Republican. New York State Assembly
The New York State Assembly is the lower house of the New York State Legislature, with the New York State Senate being the upper house. There are 150 seats in the Assembly. Assembly members serve two-year terms without term limits. The Assembly convenes at the State Capitol in Albany. Leadership of the Assembly The Speaker of the Assembly presides over the Assembly. Independence Party Of New York
The Independence Party is a political party in the U.S. state of New York. The party was founded in 1991 by Dr. Gordon Black, Tom Golisano, and Laureen Oliver from Rochester, New York, and acquired ballot status in 1994. They lost their ballot status in 2020 under a change in the New York state election law that required at least 130,000 votes on the party line every two years. Although often associated with Ross Perot, as the party came to prominence in the wake of Perot's 1992 presidential campaign, it was created prior to Perot's run. In 2020, it affiliated with the Alliance Party, but disaffiliated in 2021. Andrew Garbarino
Andrew Reed Garbarino (born September 27, 1984) is an American attorney and politician serving as the U.S. representative for New York's 2nd congressional district since 2021. A member of the Republican Party, he served as the New York State Assemblyman for the 7th district from 2013 to 2020. Early life and education Garbarino was born and raised in Sayville, New York. He graduated from Sayville High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and classical humanities from George Washington University. Philip Ramos
Philip Ramos (born April 6, 1956) is an American politician who represents the 6th District of the New York Assembly. He is a Democrat. The district includes portions of the town of Islip, including Bay Shore, Brentwood, Central Islip and Islandia in Suffolk County on Long Island. Ramos is the son of a correction officer and a registered nurse. He graduated from Brentwood High School in 1974, and went to work as a therapy aide at the Pilgrim Psychiatric Center. He later became an emergency medical technician. Ramos later became a Suffolk County police officer. He worked eight years in the narcotics unit as an undercover officer. He was promoted to detective in 1987 and retired in 1999. Steve Englebright
Steven C. Englebright (born August 24, 1946) was the Assembly member for the 4th District of the New York Assembly from 1992 until his defeat in 2022. He is a Democrat. Englebright was first elected to the New York State Assembly in 1992. He was the chair of the Assembly Committee on Environmental Conservation. Englebright graduated from Bayside High School in Queens, New York. He received a B.S. degree from the University of Tennessee in 1969 and an M.S. in Paleontology/Sedimentology from Stony Brook University in 1974. Anthony Howard Palumbo (born September 14, 1970) is an American Republican Party politician who currently represents the 1st district of the New York State Senate. He previously served as a member of the New York State Assembly. Palumbo attended high school at Patchogue-Medford High School where he starred as a baseball player earning an athletic scholarship to Lafayette College. In 1992, Palumbo was named to the All-Patriot League baseball team. In 1994 Palumbo graduated with a bachelor's degree in Government and Law from Lafayette College. Suffolk County () is the easternmost county in the U.S. state of New York. It is mainly located on the eastern end of Long Island, but also includes several smaller islands. Edward P. Mangano (born March 24, 1962) is an American politician from the state of New York. A Republican, he was the Nassau County Executive from January 2010 to December 2017, and a former legislator in Nassau County, New York. He was elected in 1995 and served seven terms as a county legislator. In November 2009, he defeated incumbent Thomas R. Suozzi for Nassau County Executive. In November 2013, he was re-elected, again defeating Suozzi, by 59% to 41%. In October 2016, a 13-count federal indictment for fraud and bribery was unsealed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York against Mangano, his wife Linda, and Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto. He did not seek reelection in 2017. He and his wife were both convicted in March 2019, and are both facing up to 20 years in prison.
