2018 MSBL Season
The 2018 MSBL season was the 30th season of the Men's State Basketball League (SBL). The regular season began on Friday 16 March, with round 1 seeing the reigning Champions the Perth Redbacks hosting the Lakeside Lightning. The 2018 MSBL All-Star Game was played on 4 June at Bendat Basketball Centre – the home of basketball in Western Australia. The regular season ended on Saturday 28 July. The finals began on Friday 3 August and ended on Saturday 1 September, when the Perry Lakes Hawks defeated the Joondalup Wolves in the MSBL Grand Final. Regular season The regular season began on Friday 16 March and ended on Saturday 28 July after 20 rounds of competition. Again in 2018, all games over the Easter Weekend were played on a blockbuster Thursday night with six venues all hosting games before the league took a break for the Easter long weekend. State Basketball League
NBL1 West, formerly the State Basketball League (SBL), is a semi-professional basketball league in Western Australia, comprising both a men's and women's competition. In 2020, Basketball Western Australia partnered with the National Basketball League (NBL) to bring NBL1 to Western Australia. NBL1 replaced the former SBL to create more professional pathways and opportunities for males and females playing basketball in Western Australia. As a result, the SBL became the west conference of NBL1. History The State Basketball League originated in 1972 as the District Competition. South West Slammers
South West Slammers is an NBL1 West club based in Bunbury, Western Australia. The club fields a team in both the Men's and Women's NBL1 West. The Slammers play their home games at Eaton Recreation Centre and represent Western Australia's South West region. The club was originally based in the City of Bunbury at Hay Park Recreation Centre (became known as South West Sports Centre in 2002) but relocated north to the suburb of Eaton in 2005 and moved into Eaton Recreation Centre. Club history Men's team 1989 saw the formation of the State Basketball League (SBL) with both a men's and women's competition. Point (basketball)
Points in basketball are used to keep track of the score in a game. Points can be accumulated by making field goals (two or three points) or free throws (one point). If a player makes a field goal from within the three-point line, the player scores two points. If the player makes a field goal from beyond the three-point line, the player scores three points. The team that has recorded the most points at the end of a game is declared that game's winner. Floreat, Western Australia
Floreat is a residential suburb west-northwest of the central business district of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. It is bordered on Underwood Avenue, Selby Street, Cromarty Road and Durston Road. It is the head of the Town of Cambridge, which has its municipal offices and library in the suburb. Stephen Black
Stephen Black (born 5 April 1980) is an Australian former professional basketball player who played 11 seasons in the National Basketball League (NBL). He is the son of Alan Black. Born in Melbourne, Victoria, Black attended the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra in 1998 and 1999. He made his debut in the NBL in October 1998, playing his first five seasons with the Perth Wildcats. He joined the Brisbane Bullets in 2003 and then the Cairns Taipans in 2007. He retired in 2009 having played 298 NBL games. His final season in the NBL was cut short by a back injury. In 2010, Black coached the South West Metro Pirates in the Queensland Basketball League. Jarrad Prue
Jarrad Prue (born 11 February 1982) is an Australian former basketball player and current coach. He played 15 seasons with the Lakeside Lightning of the NBL1 West and is considered one of the NBL1 West's all-time best, having earned the title as the league's greatest ever rebounder. In 2013, he had a three-game stint with the Perth Wildcats of the National Basketball League (NBL). In 2020, he was appointed president of the Lakeside Lightning. Greg Hire
Greg Hire (born 19 September 1987) is an Australian former professional basketball player. He played four years of college basketball in the United States before joining the Perth Wildcats of the National Basketball League (NBL) in 2010 as a development player. In 2011, he was elevated to the full-time roster and in 2014 he won his first NBL championship. He went on to win three more championships in 2016, 2017 and 2019. In the NBL1 West, he won a championship with the Wanneroo Wolves in 2011 and again with the Rockingham Flames in 2022. Early life Hire was born in Perth, Western Australia. Ben Ettridge
Benjamin James Ettridge (born 15 April 1974) is an Australian basketball coach. Playing career Ettridge competed in the State Basketball League between 1993 and 2004, playing for the Cockburn Cougars (1993–1994), Willetton Tigers (1995–1996), Mandurah Magic (1997–1999; 2002–2004) and Perth Redbacks (2001). Coaching career National wheelchair basketball teams Ettridge has served in a variety of men and women's coaching positions for Australia's national wheelchair basketball program. Earnest Ross
Earnest Lee Ross Jr. (born January 27, 1991) is an American professional basketball player who last played for Toyoda Gosei Scorpions of the Japanese B.League. Born in the U.S. territory of Guam, he represented the Guam national team for the first time in 2018. He played college basketball for Auburn and Missouri before beginning his professional career in Australia in 2014. Jacob Holmen
Jacob Ervin Holmen (born August 17, 1991) is an American former professional basketball player. He played four years of college basketball for North Texas, but his time on the court was restricted due to injuries, including his senior year where he sat out the entire second half of the season after sustaining a third concussion in just over a year. Upon turning pro, he played in Australia and Bulgaria, making a name for himself in the State Basketball League (SBL). Shawn Redhage
Shawn Michael Redhage (born 21 January 1981) is an American-Australian former professional basketball player who is most known for his 12 seasons played with the Perth Wildcats of the National Basketball League (NBL). He played four years of college basketball for the Arizona State Sun Devils before moving to Australia in 2004 to play professionally. Red Frogs
Red Frogs Australia is a Christian Youth charity run by volunteers known as the 'Red Frogs Crew'. The volunteers participate in many events that are attended by school leavers and university students, such as schoolies week, university parties, high school seminars, music festivals and sporting events. The Red Frogs Crew gained their name from handing out lollies named Allens' Red Frogs. Since 1997, Allens' has donated over 24 tonne of the red frog confectionery every year.
