2018 FBD Insurance League
The 2018 FBD Insurance League was an inter-county and Gaelic football competition in the province of Connacht. All five Connacht county teams participated. No third-level college teams competed. Galway and Roscommon were scheduled to play their fifth round tie on 21 January 2018. After the fourth round games, both Galway and Roscommon had qualified for the final meaning that the result of their fifth round tie was irrelevant. Both teams requested that the either the match be cancelled or played as the final. The Connacht Council initially insisted that both the fifth round tie and the final be played in order to "respect the integrity of the Connacht FBD Football League". However, the game was cancelled on 21 January due to poor weather and the Connacht Council eventually agreed not to play the "dead rubber." Roscommon were the winners. Kevin McStay
Kevin McStay (born 9 May 1962) is an Irish Gaelic football manager, commentator, analyst and former player. He has been manager of the senior Mayo county team since 2022. McStay was educated at St Jarlath's College in Tuam during the 1970s, playing for the school team. In retirement from playing McStay became an analyst with ''The Sunday Game''; however, he remained involved as a manager and coach. Early and personal life Born in Castlebar, County Mayo, McStay was introduced to the game by his father, a former player with Tuam Stars. His brother, Paul McStay, and his brother-in-law, Liam McHale, also played with Mayo. Army career McStay was an officer in the Irish Army from 1982 to 2013. He reached the rank of lieutenant colonel. Connacht
Connacht ( ; ga, Connachta or ), is one of the provinces of Ireland, in the west of Ireland. Dead Rubber
Dead rubber is a term used in sporting parlance to describe a match in a series where the series result has already been decided by earlier matches. The dead rubber match therefore has no effect on the winner and loser of the series, other than the total number of matches won and lost. The term is used in Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup tennis, as well as in international cricket, field hockey, the FIFA World Cup, UEFA Champions League, Rugby World Cup and the State of Origin series. For example, in a Davis Cup series, each pair of competing countries play five matches (''rubbers'') where the winner is decided on a best-of-five basis. GAA County Teams
A county is a geographic region within Gaelic games, controlled by a county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) and originally based on the 32 counties of Ireland as they were in 1884. While the administrative geography of Ireland has since changed, with several new counties created and the six that make up Northern Ireland superseded by 11 local government districts, the counties in Gaelic games have remained largely unchanged. However, the county as used in Gaelic games does not always and everywhere cover precisely the same territory as the traditional county. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. Roscommon GAA
The Roscommon County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, Coiste Chontae Ros Comáin) or Roscommon GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Roscommon. The county board is also responsible for the Roscommon county teams. The county football team was the third from the province of Connacht to win an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC), following Galway and Mayo. It competes in the Connacht Senior Football Championship, which it has won 23 times. The team won back-to-back All-Ireland SFC titles in 1943 and 1944. FBD Insurance League
The FBD, also called the FBD Insurance League, FBD Connacht League, the Connacht FBD Football League or FBD Insurance Connacht GAA Senior Football Competition, is an annual Gaelic football competition organised by Connacht GAA and sponsored by FBD. The participants are the five county teams. Formerly several third-level college teams also competed, but from 2018 onward it became an all-county tournament. In 2019 and 2020 it was a knockout tournament with no league element, and so it was called the "Connacht GAA Senior Football Competition"; in 2023 it was simply referred to as "the FBD." It was cancelled in 2021 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Gaelic games, but returned in January 2022. Galway lead the way with most titles.
