2018 European Athletics Championships – Women's 400 Metres
The women's 400 metres at the 2018 European Athletics Championships was held over three rounds at the Olympiastadion (Berlin), Olympic Stadium in Berlin, Germany, on 8, 9, and 11 August 2018. It was the nineteenth time this event was contested at the European Athletics Championships. Athletes could qualify by achieving the entry standard of 53.40 seconds or by their ranking in selected athletics meetings. Forty-two athletes from twenty-one nations competed in the event. Thirty-two athletes competed in round 1, where fourteen athletes advanced to the semi-finals. Ten athletes with a bye (sports), bye in the first round joined them there. Eight athletes qualified for the final, which was won by Justyna Święty-Ersetic of Poland in 50.41 seconds, followed by Maria Belimpasaki of Greece in second place in a List of Greek records in athletics, national record of 50.45 seconds and Lisanne de Witte in third place in a List of Dutch records in athletics, national record ... Marita Koch
Marita Koch (later Meier-Koch; born 18 February 1957) is a German former Sprint (running), sprint track and field athlete. During her career she set 16 List of world records in athletics, world records in outdoor sprints as well as 14 world records in indoor events. Her record of 47.60 in the 400 metres, set on 6 October 1985, still stands. Biography Born in Wismar, East Germany, Marita Koch displayed exceptional speed even as a young child and was defeating boys much older than herself in sprint races whilst at school. By the time she had turned 15 years old, she was training under Wolfgang Meier. Meier worked as a naval engineer, but also coached athletics part-time. Koch and Meier moved to Rostock where Koch began to study medicine. However, she decided to stop her studies and focus on running instead. Libania Grenot Martinez (born 12 July 1983) is a Cuban-born Italy, Italian former athlete specialising in the 400 metres. Two times European champion (2014, 2016), she holds the Italian records in the 200 and 400 metres. Biography Born in Santiago de Cuba on 12 July 1983, Grenot started running at the age of 9. Léa Sprunger (born 5 March 1990) is a Swiss former track and field athlete. Originally a heptathlete like her older sister Ellen, she began concentrating on the 200 metres and 400 metres in 2011, and then on the 400 metres hurdles from 2015. Her best times in the 400 m and 400 m hurdles of 50.52 s (2018) and 54.06 s (2019) are the Swiss records. Shaunae Miller-Uibo (born 15 April 1994) is a Bahamian track and field sprinter who competes in the 200 and 400 metres. She is a two-time Olympic champion after winning the women's 400 metres at the 2016 Rio Olympics and again at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
