2018 European Athletics Championships
The 2018 European Athletics Championships were held in Berlin, Germany, from 6 to 12 August 2018. The championships were part of the first European Championships with other events happening in the United Kingdom. For the second Championships in a row the Russian team did not participate; this was due to the suspension of the All-Russia Athletic Federation by the International Association of Athletics Federations. However, several athletes were cleared by the IAAF to compete as Authorised Neutral Athletes under the flag of the European Athletic Association. Mariya Lasitskene became the first such athlete to win a gold medal, in the women's high jump. Antigoni Drisbioti ( el, Αντιγόνη Ντρισμπιώτη; born 21 March 1984) is a Greek race walker. She won gold medals in the 20 kilometres walk and 35 km race walk at the 2022 European Athletics Championships, the first golden double for Greece at the event. Her medal at the longer distance was her first international victory and the first major championship title for her country in race walking. Drisbioti finished fourth in the 35 km walk at the 2022 World Athletics Championships. She took bronze in the 20 km walk at the 2013 Mediterranean Games. She represented Greece at both the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Drisbioti is the Greek record holder for the 3000 m walk, 20 km walk and 35 km walk. She won eight national titles. Meryem Bekmez (born 31 July 2000) is a Turkish race walker specialising in the 5000 metres and 10,000 metres. She is a native of Diyarbakır, Turkey. She was a member of the municipality-owned club of Kayapınar, before she was transferred by Enka SK in Istanbul. Early life Meryem Bekmez was born in Şilbe neighborhood of Yenişehir district of Diyarbakır, southeastern Turkey on 31 July 2000.
