2018 European Athletics Championships
The 2018 European Athletics Championships were held in Berlin, Germany, from 6 to 12 August 2018. The championships were part of the first European Championships with other events happening in the United Kingdom. For the second Championships in a row the Russian team did not participate; this was due to the suspension of the All-Russia Athletic Federation by the International Association of Athletics Federations. However, several athletes were cleared by the IAAF to compete as Authorised Neutral Athletes under the flag of the European Athletic Association. Mariya Lasitskene became the first such athlete to win a gold medal, in the women's high jump. The European Athletics Championships is a biennial event (since 2010), which began in 1934. European Athletics accepts only athletes who are representing one of the organisation's European member states and the body recognises records set at editions of the European Athletics Championships. The Championships records in athletics are the best marks set in competitions at the event. The athletics events at the Championships are divided into four groups: track events (including sprints, middle- and long-distance running, hurdling and relays), field events (including javelin, discus, hammer, pole vault, long and triple jumps), road events and combined events (the heptathlon and decathlon). David King (athlete)
David King (born 13 June 1994) is an English Olympic athlete specialising in the high hurdles. He is a three times British champion over 110m hurdles and three times British champion over 60m hurdles. He represented Team GB at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (held in 2021) and made the semi-finals, finishing 19th overall. At the 2023 British Indoor Athletics Championships he took the title of 2023 UK national champion over 60m indoor hurdles. He then reached the finals of the 2023 European Athletics Indoor Championships in Istanbul where he finished 7th. He is currently based in Phoenix, Arizona, and trains with Phoenix Track Club under Coach Tim O'Neil. Garfield Darien (born 22 December 1987) is a French track and field athlete who specialises in the 110 metres hurdles. Born in Lyon, Darien made his first international appearances as a junior, finishing in seventh at the 2004 World Junior Championships in Athletics and becoming the 110 m hurdles champion at the 2005 European Athletics Junior Championships. He set a personal best of 13.73 seconds that year, but competed infrequently over the following two years. A single-elimination, knockout, or sudden death tournament is a type of elimination tournament where the loser of each match-up is immediately eliminated from the tournament.
