2018 Europe Top 16 Cup
The 2018 Europe Top 16 Cup (also referred to as the China Construction Bank 2018 Europe Top 16 Cup for sponsorship reasons) was a table tennis competition held from 3–4 February in Montreux, Switzerland, organised under the authority of the European Table Tennis Union (ETTU). It was the 47th edition of the event, and the third time that it had been held in Switzerland. Events were held in men's singles and women's singles, and the three medallists in each event qualified for the 2018 Men's and Women's World Cups. Medallists Men's singles Players Qualification was based on the European ranking for December 2017, with seedings based on the ranking for February 2018. Lionel Weber qualified as the host nation representative. Portugal's Marcos Freitas also qualified, but withdrew two days before the start of the competition due to injury. Montreux (, , ; frp, Montrolx) is a Swiss municipality and town on the shoreline of Lake Geneva at the foot of the Alps. Marcos André Sousa da Silva Freitas (born 8 April 1988) is a Portuguese table tennis player who has won European Championships in singles, doubles, and team events. He participated at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing where he got knocked out in the Round of 64. In the same year he won the bronze medal in the men's doubles at the European Championship with Tiago Apolónia. Three years later at the 2011 Table Tennis European Championships he went on to win the gold medal with his doubles partner Andrej Gaćina. Alexander Igorevich Shibaev (russian: Александр Игоревич Шибаев; born 9 September 1990 in Yaroslavl) is a Russian table tennis player. Tiago André Barata Feio Peixoto Apolónia (born 28 July 1986) is a Portuguese table tennis player for German club TTF LIEBHERR Ochsenhausen and Portugal.
