2018 AFC U-23 Championship
The 2018 AFC U-23 Championship (also known as the 2018 AFC U-23 Asian Cup) was the third edition of the AFC U-23 Championship, the biennial international age-restricted football championship organised by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) for the men's under-23 national teams of Asia. A total of 16 teams competed in the tournament. It took place between 9–27 January 2018, and was hosted by China. Uzbekistan defeated Vietnam in the final to win their first title. Japan were the defending champions, but failed to defend the title after losing to Uzbekistan in the quarter-finals. Hosts selection * Qualification The qualifiers were held from 15 to 23 July 2017. China also participated in the qualifiers, even though they had already qualified automatically as hosts. Qualified teams The following 16 teams qualified for the final tournament. Almoez Ali Zainalabedeen Mohamed Abdulla ( ar, المعز علي زين العابدين محمد عبد الله; born 19 August 1996) is a professional footballer who plays as a striker for Qatar Stars League side Al-Duhail, whom he captains. Born in Sudan, he plays for the Qatar national team. Ali is a member of the Qatar squad which won the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, where he scored nine goals, which also serves as the record for most goals scored at an Asian Cup. Peter Daniel Green (born 29 May 1978) is a retired Australian soccer referee in the Australian A-League. Green has been FIFA listed since 2006 and a member of the AFC Elite Referees Panel since 2008. He has refereed in three A-League Grand Final matches. He was the A-League referee of the year in 2013 and 2014. Career Green took up refereeing as a teenager, progressing to National Soccer League level in 2000. He has refereeing in the top tier of Australian soccer since 2002. 2016 AFC U-23 Championship Qualification
The 2016 AFC U-23 Championship qualification was a men's under-23 football competition which decided the participating teams of the 2016 AFC U-23 Championship. Players born on or after 1 January 1993 were eligible to compete in the tournament. A total of 16 teams qualified to play in the final tournament, including Qatar who qualified automatically as hosts. The top three teams of the final tournament qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics men's football tournament in Brazil.
