The 2017–18 season was Sporting de Gijón, Real Sporting's List of Sporting de Gijón seasons, 112th season in existence and the club's All-time La Liga table, 45th season in the second flight of Spanish football, the first one since its last relegation. It covers a period from 1 July 2017 to 30 June 2018. Season overview Pre-season On 28 May 2017, Real Sporting sacked Nicolás Rodríguez after three seasons as director of football, and hired Miguel Torrecilla with the aim to replace him. On 9 June 2017, the club announced Asturian enterprise Teslacard as the new shirt sponsor of the club. One day later, Rubi (footballer), Rubi confirmed that the club would not extend his contract for one more season. On 15 June 2017, Paco Herrera was hired as new coach after agreeing with the club a two-year contract. Sporting De Gijón
Real Sporting de Gijón, S.A.D. (), commonly known as Real Sporting, Sporting Gijón, or simply Sporting (although in an international context this can lead to confusion with Sporting Clube de Portugal) is a Spanish football club from Gijón, Principality of Asturias. Founded on 1 July 1905, it plays in La Liga Santander. Known as ''Los Rojiblancos'' because of their red and white striped jerseys, their home ground is El Molinón stadium, the oldest professional football ground in Spain, in use since at least 1908. Francisco "Paco" Herrera Lorenzo (born 2 December 1953) is a Spanish retired footballer who played as a midfielder, and is a manager. His managerial career of over a quarter of a century was spent mostly in Segunda División, where he led 13 clubs and won promotion to La Liga with Celta and Las Palmas. Playing career Born in Barcelona, Catalonia, Herrera started playing professionally with CE Sabadell FC in his native region, appearing in two Segunda División seasons with the team.
