Professional * March 5 — The San Miguel Beermen defeat the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in Game 5 of the PBA Philippine Cup Finals to win the series 4–1 and win their 24th PBA championship. 2017 PBA D-League Aspirant's Cup
The 2017 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup is the first conference of the 2017 PBA Developmental League season. The tournament opened on January 19, 2017 at the Ynares Sports Arena, Pasig. There are 10 teams in this season's Aspirant's Cup, 4 are holdovers from last year's Foundation Cup, 2 returnees after a short hiatus, and 3 new squads. 5 of the teams were represented by players from various colleges and universities. Draft The annual draft of the PBA D-League will be conducted on December 20, 2016. 128 aspirants—113 local players and 15 Filipino-foreigners—had already submitted their intention to participate in the draft. AMA, Tanduay, Racal, Caféfrance and Wang's will picked the first five draft picks, while a lottery will decide the draft orders of 4 new teams, San Beda-Cignal, JRU, MLQU and Batangas. Christian Standhardinger
Christian Karl Standhardinger (born on ) is a Filipino-German professional basketball player for the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). He was selected first overall by the San Miguel Beermen in the 2017 PBA draft making him the oldest first overall pick. Early life Standhardinger was born on July 4, 1989, in Munich, in then West Germany to a Filipino mother. His mother, Elizabeth Santos Hermoso traces her roots to the town of Angono, Rizal. Growing up in Germany, Standhardinger's maternal grandfather, Boy Hermoso, who played in the Philippines' CYMCA basketball championship in the 1950s introduced him to the sport of basketball. College career Standhardinger began his first 2 years of college basketball at Nebraska. During his freshman season, he had to sit out the first 15 games due to NCAA's ruling since he played for a professional team in Germany before heading to the United States for college. Donnie Liboon Nietes (born May 12, 1982) is a Filipino professional boxer. He is a world champion in four weight-classes, having previously held the WBO mini-flyweight title from 2007 to 2011; the WBO and ''The Ring'' magazine junior-flyweight titles between 2011 and 2016; IBF flyweight title from 2017 to 2018; and the WBO junior-bantamweight title from 2018 to 2019. 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup
The 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup will be the 19th tournament of the FIBA Basketball World Cup for men's national basketball teams. The tournament will be the second to feature 32 teams. For the first time in its history, the World Cup will be hosted by multiple nations, the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia, from 25 August to 10 September 2023. It is the first World Cup to be hosted in Indonesia, and the second to be hosted in both the Philippines and Japan since they first hosted the tournament in 1978 and 2006, respectively. The tournament will also be the second straight to be held in Asia after China's hosting of the 2019 edition. 2017 SEABA Under-16 Championship
The 2017 SEABA Under-16 Championship was the qualifying tournament for Southeast Asia Basketball Association at the 2017 FIBA Under-16 Asian Championship. The tournament was held in Quezon City, Philippines from May 14 to 18. The Smart Araneta Coliseum was the venue of the five-team competition, coinciding with the 2017 SEABA Championship. The Philippines won their fourth straight title after winning all of their games in the tournament. Malaysia placed second while Thailand finished third. The top two teams will represent SEABA to the Asian tournament.
