2017 World Rowing Championships
The 2017 World Rowing Championships were the 47th edition of the World Rowing Championships that were held from 24 September to 1 October 2017 in Sarasota, Florida. Host selection During 2013, Plovdiv and Sarasota, Florida both applied to host the 2017 World Rowing Championships. In April 2013, a committee of International Rowing Federation (FISA) officials visited Sarasota and then Plovdiv the following month. It was then noted that Plovdiv had hosted the 2012 World Rowing Championships and bid documentation for 2017 had not been finalized. Before the next FISA congress, the bid from Plovdiv was changed to apply for the 2018 hosting rights. At the FISA Congress held on 2 September 2013, hosting rights were assigned by unanimous decision for World Rowing Championships to Sarasota for 2017, Plovdiv for 2018, and Plovdiv for the 2015 World Rowing U23 Championships. Nathan Benderson Park
Nathan Benderson Park, previously known as North Metro Park and Cooper Creek Park, is a park in the U.S. state of Florida, owned by Sarasota County. It incorporates a artificial lake in northern Sarasota County, directly south of the Manatee County county line, west of Interstate 75. The lake is a rowing venue and hosted the 2017 World Rowing Championships. History The area was originally used as pasture land. The land was excavated for Interstate 75, which runs to the east of the lake. The section of Interstate 75 between U.S. 301 north of the lake, to River Road near North Port further south opened in 1981. Cooper Creek flows through the lake and drains in Braden River further north. In 1995, the land changed ownership from APAC-Florida Incorporated to Sarasota County for US$2.2 million. Allar Raja
Allar Raja (born 22 June 1983) is an Estonian rower. He is a member of rowing club "SK Kalev" located in Pärnu. Rowing career 2000–2008 Raja competed in the World Rowing Junior Championships in 2000 in the quadruple sculls event (19th) and in 2001 in the double sculls event (13th). In 2004 he competed in the U-23 World Regatta in the single sculls event achieving 8th position. His first appearance in the World Rowing Championships was in 2005 in Gifu, Japan in the double sculls event with Silver Sonntak. They were second in Final C, achieving 14th position overall. Raja won his first World Championships medal in 2006 in Eton, Great Britain, where ha was a member of the bronze-winning quadruple sculls team with Andrei Jämsä, Tõnu Endrekson and Igor Kuzmin. 2007 in Munich, Germany he competed in the quadruple sculls event with Kuzmin, Latin and Taimsoo earning 8th position. Kaur Kuslap
Kaur Kuslap (born 26 January 1990) is an Estonian rower. He was born in Viljandi. He started his rowing training in 2002, coached by Ruth Vaar. He has won the Estonian championships 14 times. In 2012 he was a reserve competitor for Estonian rower team in 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Graeme Edward Thomas (born 8 November 1988) is a British rower. Rowing career Thomas competed at the 2013 World Rowing Championships in Chungju, where he won a bronze medal as part of the quad sculls with Sam Townsend, Charles Cousins and Peter Lambert. The following year he competed at the 2014 World Rowing Championships in Bosbaan, Amsterdam, where he won a silver medal as part of the quadruple sculls with Townsend, Cousins and Lambert. John Collins (rower)
John E. Collins (born 24 January 1989) is a British rower. He competed at the Olympics in the Double Sculls event at both the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Collins won a silver medal at the 2017 World Rowing Championships in Sarasota, Florida, as part of the quadruple sculls with Jack Beaumont, Jonathan Walton, and Graeme Thomas. In 2021, he won a European bronze medal in the double sculls in Varese, Italy. Jonathan Walton
Jonathan Walton (born 6 October 1990) is a British rower. He competed in the men's double sculls event at the 2016 Summer Olympics alongside John Collins. Biography Walton was born in Leicester and attended Groby Community College and Loughborough University. He started rowing at Leicester Rowing Club where he was coached by Howard Marsh. He represented Great Britain at junior and under-23 level before making his senior world championship debut in 2014. In 2016 he won his first World Cup medal, a silver at Poznan, before making his Olympic debut in Rio. Along with John Collins he finished fifth in the final. Jack Beaumont (rower)
Jack Beaumont (born 21 November 1993) is a retired British rower. He is the silver medallist at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Men's quadruple sculls. He also won a silver medal at the World Championships. Career Jack is the son of Olympic rower Peter Beaumont. Beaumont started competing as part of the GB Rowing Team at the 2010 World Junior Championships in Racice, where they finished fourth. In 2014, Beaumont was a World U23 bronze medallist in men's double scull. Beaumont was involved in an accident in 2015, which fractured several vertebrae. He missed being selected for the 2016 Summer Olympics, but days before the Games started, he was chosen to replace Graeme Thomas who had fallen ill.
