2017 World Para Ice Hockey Championships
The 2017 World Para Ice Hockey Championships for A-Pool teams (Canada, Germany, Italy, Norway, South Korea, Sweden, United States) was held in Gangneung, South Korea, from 11 April through 20 April 2017. The opening ceremony was held on 11 April and games were played from 12 April through 20 April, followed by the closing ceremony. This event was previously known as the IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships. On 30 November 2016, the International Paralympic Committee adopted the "World Para" brand across the ten sports it governs, the official name of the sport changed from "sledge hockey" to "Para ice hockey", and the event became the "World Para Ice Hockey Championships". The World Championships for B-Pool teams (Czech Republic, Great Britain, Japan, Slovakia) was held at Hakucho Arena in Tomakomai, Japan, from 28 November to 3 December 2016. Gangneung Hockey Centre
Gangneung Hockey Centre ( ko, 강릉 아이스하키 경기장) is an indoor arena located in the coastal city of Gangneung, South Korea. The arena was one of the two venues for the ice hockey events at the 2018 Winter Olympics, serving as the main venue for the men's tournament and medal matches. It also hosted the ice sledge hockey competition during the 2018 Winter Paralympics. The cost of construction for the venue was estimated to be 108 billion won (about $90 million US). Construction started in July 2014 and was completed in March 2017. Korea Ice Hockey Association president Chung Mong-won stated a desire for the Gangneung Hockey Centre to become the focus of ice hockey in Korea, and to leave an Olympic Games legacy. He said, "My dream is to turn Gangneung into a hockey town. I hope to see the day when people think of Gangneung, they'll think of hockey". Ben Delaney
Ben Delaney (born August 23, 1996) is a Canadian ice sledge hockey player. He won a bronze medal at the 2014 Winter Paralympics, and silver medals at the 2018 and 2022 Winter Paralympics. Personal life At the age of twelve, Delaney was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, the same cancer that Canadian hero Terry Fox had. He had an above the knee amputation with the replacement of his knee with ankle bones. Formerly an active and successful multi-sport stand up athlete, he took up sledge hockey in 2010 with the Ottawa Sledgehammers. He graduated from St. Pius X High School in Ottawa, and now trains and competes for Team Canada full time. Ben's parents are Anthony and Mary Ann and his one sister is Hannah. Corbin Watson
Corbin Watson (born January 6, 1987) is a Canadian Paralympic ice sledge hockey goalkeeper whose team won 3–0 against Norway and received bronze medal at the 2014 Winter Paralympics. Previously, he participated at the 2013 IPC World Sledge Hockey Championships where he and his team won gold medals. An amputee, he lost his lower right leg following a car crash in 2006. Following the accident he joined Canadian sledge hockey team called Windsor Ice Bullets 2 years later in Windsor, Ontario where he was inspired by Ray Grassi, his teammate. Dominic Larocque
Dominic Larocque (born July 30, 1987) is a Canadian ice sledge hockey player. Early life Larocque was born in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec and lists his hometown as Quebec City. Larocque served in Afghanistan with the Canadian Forces and had his left leg amputated above the knee as a result as injuries sustained while serving near the Panjwayi District when an improvised explosive device exploded under a vehicle he was riding in. James Gemmell
James Gemmell (born April 26, 1980) is a Canadian ice sledge hockey player. Gemmell was born in 100 Mile House, British Columbia and lists his hometown as Quesnel, British Columbia. In 2004, he had his right leg amputated above the knee after an automobile accident. He began playing sledge hockey in 2006 with the Surrey Eagles. Adam Dixon
Adam Dixon (born August 13, 1989) is a Canadian ice sledge hockey player. Life and career Born in Midland, Ontario, Dixon was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma in his right tibia in 1999 at the age of 10 and underwent a 10-hour surgery to remove the tumor and part of his tibia. After this surgery Dixon was unable to play able-bodied hockey and was introduced to sledge hockey at the age of 11. Dixon played 6 years with the Elmvale Bears and at the age of 17 was invited to try out for the Canadian National Sledge hockey team. At the conclusion of the tryout Dixon was asked to join the team for the 2006/2007 season. Brad Bowden
Bradley Bowden (born May 26, 1983) is a Canadian ice sledge hockey and wheelchair basketball player. Life Born in Mississauga, Ontario, Bowden lives with sacral agenesis. He began playing ice sledge hockey in 1997, aged 13, for the Kitchener Sidewinders. At the age of 15, he was selected for Canada's national team. In 2003, he was named to the men's national wheelchair basketball team which eventually won gold in the 2004 summer Paralympic games in Athens, Greece. Steve Arsenault
Stephen Arsenault (born September 6, 1988) is a Canadian ice sledge hockey player. Arsenault was born in Hamilton, Ontario to Joe and Jill Arsenault. He has avascular necrosis of the femoral head. He began his sledge hockey career in 2004 in Edmonton with the Paralympic Sports Association Dogs. He also played for the Edmonton Impact sledge hockey team. He took a hiatus from sledge hockey from 2007 to 2010, a timespan in which his mother died and his father was seriously injured in a workplace accident which resulted in amputation of a leg. Greg Westlake
Gregory Westlake (born 12 June 1986) is a Canadian ice sledge hockey player. Early life and career Both his legs were amputated when he was 18 months old; because of a congenital defect he had no tibia in one leg, and no fibula in the other. At age six he appeared in a public service announcement for The War Amps non-profit organization on playing safe, and is still close to the organization that provides support and services to all Canadian amputees. He began to play ice sledge hockey in 2001 at age 15, for the Mississauga Cruisers, then made his debut for the Canadian national team in 2003, eventually becoming captain of the team.
